I'm Molly Martin and I'm looking for the AIDS about AIDS office. Well, you found it. This is an office? No, I thought, this is a closet. The people seemed harmless enough, though, so I stuck around that closet... and have been working in that "office" ever since. When Mark Ferguson first ap proached me about working on AIDS about AIDS '96,1 was thrilled. I attended my first AIDS awareness event when I was eleven, and the cause has not been able to get rid of me since then. When I came to Guilford, I had hopes of finding others with similar con cerns. I never dreamed that I would find a national conference. Had I stumbled into an after-school special? Did people actu ally do this? They do. They also work incredibly hard at it I found out, after about one week as one of the two service-day coordinators, that the conference was not for the weak of heart. Late-night phone conferences, February 9, 1996 panic attacks, paper cuts and dealing with the often stubborn "outside world" were just a few of the perks. In fact, there have been several times in the four months since I joined AIDS about AIDS that I have se riously thought about pulling out a shot gun in the post office or doing something equally horrific. Why haven't you seen me on America's Most Wanted? My co-workers have saved me. I found that someone would always be there to help finish a job, to listen, to scream with or whatever was needed. The people with whom I share the privilege of organizing the conference keep me together. Their presence reassures me that there will always be people to battle the virus. There will always be people who refuse to be bullied by red tape. There will always be people who care. That is what this Guilford student has taken back from the AIDS about AIDS closet every night Something wonderful is going to happen on campus February 15-18. It is something that all of us in AIDS about AlDS—all of Guilford in fact —can be proud of every day.
