Football wins home opener, 24-10 GEORGE BINNS staff writer Over 1,200 fans filled Armfield Athletic Center Saturday and watched Junior Lord es cort the Guilford football team to a 24-10 vic tory over ODAC rival Washington & Lee. Quarterback Dan Strelkauskas passed to Lord nine times for 148 yards, including all three of the Quaker touchdowns. "Danny and I worked well together today," said Lord, who was named ODAC offensive player of the week. "We made the same reads and just executed the plays." Strelkauskas threw 13 passes for 215 yards and no interceptions, but credits a young of fensive line for his success. "We had two starting linemen go down with injuries this week and had to fill their spots with some unseasoned guys," he said. "They stepped up and did a heck of a job." Quaker offensive coordinator Brindon Christman read a quote to his players every day at practice for a week prior to the game. "An angry football team is better than a con fident one." Going unbeaten last week, the Quakers improved their record to 1-2-1 on the young season. Guilford started the week with a hard fought 1-1 draw against OD AC oppo nent Emory & Henry. In a contest marked by rough play and poor officiating, E&H slithered away with a tie. After dominating much of the first half without a goal, the Quakers came out strong and went ahead on Anthony Raccuglia's first tally of the season. Amen tal lapse allowed E&H to pull even with about 20 min- utes remaining. Both squads then battled through regulation and two fifteen-minute overtime periods. "It was important for us to get at least a tie against a team as good as Emory & Henry, but we need to start winning," said freshman defender Steve Marsh at the time. Win is what the Quakers did as they pleased the large parents' weekend crowd with an ex citing victory over non-conference foe North Carolina Wesleyan. The Quakers came out intent on winning and after controlling most September 27,1996 a five-game losing skid," said Christman. "We were overconfident because of our athleticism, but haven't played like a hun gry football team since the Emory & Henry game two years ago." Head coach Mike Ketchum appreciated his team's effort. "We played to win, rather than not to lose," he said. "We have to practice on the edge and play on the edge. If we play con servatively, we will lose, if we play like we played today, we will get similar results." "Our players showed considerably bet ter effort this week," said defensive coor dinator John Falvey. "They finally showed us what we saw all pre-season." "We played more aggressively up front," said defensive lineman Jared Kennerson. "Our hard work all week payed off." Combined, Jared and brother Ben ac counted for 14 tackles, while freshman line backer Carlton Hire accumulated 12, and sophomore defensive back Matt Milone made 10. The Quakers go on the road next week to face another ODAC opponent, Hampden-Sydney, who is 1-1. of the first half, they exploded in the sec ond. A great through pass by Dax Baker set up Denis Byrne's goal eight minutes into the half. Less than ten minutes later, a con troversial hand ball in the box gave Isaac Pcilant yard blast by co-captain Steve Diamond that pinged the post and wrinkled the net Guilford later took the lead for good when a 45-yard direct kick turned into Steve Marsh's first career goal. The team was upbeat about the victory and the large crowd. Dax Baker said, "We have improved every game and now people are used to playing with each other, and we're getting better." sports. Fearless Forecast picks and grins Colorado (-3 1/2) over Texas A&M: Sure, neither one of these teams has been impressive this year. However, the Buffs aren't going to let it be this close against the hapless Aggies. N.C. State (+4l/2) versus Purdue: The Wolfpack is a team with something to prove, and I think they'll get it done this week against Big Ten doormat Purdue. Louisville (-31/2) over Southern Miss: The Cardinals are quietly building a solid team. Chris Redman is a highly underrated quarterback. Penn State (-8) over Wisconsin: Joe Pa's bunch knows they have to win big to move up in the polls, and they'll roll over the Bad gers. Notre Dame (+3) over Ohio State: I'm an Irish believer after last week's win over Texas. The Buckeye's lack of quality com petition so far this season will hurt them in this game. \3 N D foDACt Men's Soccer W L T GF C.A Women's Soccer WI. It'll be closer than 17. Kentucky (+36) versus Florida: OK, so the Wildcats aren't going to win this one. But with the Gators still celebrating last week's big win, it ought to be closer than five touchdowns. Clemson (-15) over Wake Forest: If the Tigers don't win by at least three touchdowns, Tommy West can start house shopping. The Deacons win over North western might be their only victory all season. BYU (-14) over SMU: It's a given that the Cougar offense will score points. They should be able to hold SMU below 20, en abling BYU to cover the spread. Virginia (-31/2) over Texas: The Long horns may have difficulty coming down from last week's tough loss. The UVa de fense is highly underrated. 9
