Family Weekend Jubilee
MARJORIE HALL
Staff Writer
The population of Guilford College
swelled dramatically last weekend as
roughly five hundred family members,
belonging to close to two hundred stu
dents, came to the campus for family
weekend. In all, more than eight hun
dred people, including students, parents,
and faculty, were involved in the week
end festivities.
Lita Swanson, one of the main orga
nizers of the event, was pleased with the
attendance at the planned events. Al
most all of the visiting parents attended
the President's brunch in front of
Founders. The faculty colloquia, fac
ulty mixer, football game, and the Obo
Addy show were also well attended.
Not only were the events well at
tended organizers believed that most
of the family members enjoyed them

selves.
"I felt that there was a very happy and
joyous mood during the weekend," said
Lita Swanson. "In my conversations
flHij
with parents I find that if their kids are
happy, they're happy. The parents were
enjoying themselves because their kids
features
are doing well here."
Many students were pleased with the
way that the weekend was organized. "It
was a good idea for
there to be creative
things for families
to do," said Rise
Hunter, sophomore,
speaking mainly of
the Obo Addy show,
the first part of this
year's ArtsETC pro
gram at Guilford
this year. "They
didn't have any
thing like that last
year." Some stu
dents were a little
upset that the club
sports, like rugby
andultimate frisbee,
were not better ad-
vertised.
For some first
year students, it was
very exciting to see
their families for the
first time since life
at college, for vari
ous reasons. "It was
fun spending some
quality time with
my parents at
WalMart," said
Kelly White, first
year student.
Most of the students whosefamilies
did not come to see them spent their time
meeting other's parents. "I'm glad that
my parents didn't come," said one anony
mous sophomore whose view was ech
oed by other students. "I could do what
I wanted."

Arriving in droves,
parents swarmed Guilford
last weekend, eager to
visit loved ones and enjoy
the beautiful weather.

It was a weekend of good dinners,
shopping sprees, and remembering what
it was like to live at home. Most of the
students who were able to see their par
ents enjoyed doing so, but breathed a
little sigh of relief when Sunday came
and life could get back to normal.
