When Guilford administrators acted to end the college's contract with the food service two weeks ago, Marriott executives begged for a chance to rectify all commu nity complaints. Complaints included misrepre senting student hours on W-2 forms, not notifying employees of a change in pay period, failing to pay full-time workers holiday pay for many years, mistreating em ployees, and finally, outright rac ism. Last week, officials from Marriott headquarters and the corporation's educational division came on campus to talk to employ ees and set a plan for improvement. "We've made some mistakes, and all parties are trying to make things better," explains George Koeng, vice president for human resources in the education division. Doug Gilmer, production man ager, and Joseph Pin nix, lead cook, are working on revising the cafeteria's menu. "Marriott has a product that it brings and we believe we can do a good job," Koeng says. "We have to do better than we're doing. We have to make sure we have a relavent menu, including vegan and vegetarian options. We can satisfy those needs." Sm.
