Harvey shows the horror in Cambodia DAMIAN MILLER staff writer "The guilt of my nation weighs heavily on me," said Guilford's own Judy Harvey, concluding an emotional presentation about her experiences as an American in Cambodia on Tuesday, November 5 in the Gallery. Harvey's discussion and slide show were included in the obser vance of Asian Week at Guilford. The exhibition attracted a small group of curious, interested stu dents, most of whom had little previous knowledge of Cambodia beyond simple news information. Harvey began with a brief overview of Cambodian history, highlighting the violence of long conflicts such as the Vietnamese War and the tyranny of Pol Pot and the Khymer Rouge party. The major part of Harvey's pre sentation described her own ex periences in Cambodia as a teacher in an International School. She first went to Cambodia in 1990. Harvey talked extensively about the widespread poverty, un employment, and social disrup tion from Pol Pot's bloody regime. The brutality and consistent vio lence of the Pol Pot years has left an indelible mark on Cambodian society. In a particularly moving ac count, she depicted the despair of one Cambodian woman who lived in a toilet closet, and how this sad dened the children at the Interna tional School. Her frustration and concern for the Cambodian people ion to be heard, please contact your dorm senator or the Senate office. To conclude her discussion, Harvey displayed several slides of people and places in Cambodia, each of which reinforced and pro vided imagery to her speech. She delivered a poignant testimony about her visit to the War Crimes museum, where she was startled and ashamed to discover that "the United States was the star mon ster." Harvey has deep emotional ties to Cambodia, and her heartfelt presentation was appreciated by those of us who know little of the situation there. Senior Amy New some was moved by Harvey's portrayal. "I was touched by the picture she created of the poverty and suffering in Cambodia." POLAR FLEE has arrived!!
