Different groups make common cause LEIGH KING staff writer When I got to college I thought, "this is great, no more nagging parents, no more nagging teachers (here they call them pro fessors) and no more waking up at 7:00 a.m. to go to Sunday morning mass." Just be cause you are not forced to go to church on Sundays, however, does not mean that you cannot learn and be with God. Guilford has many different religious groups around campus and two Christian Youth Organizations are Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and Intervarsity (IV). Both of these organizations are open to anyone that wants to learn more about God and helps many people grow closer to Him. FCA has been operating on campuses throughout the United States for 40 years and strives to promote Christian ideals through sports. The programs for both FCA and IV change from week to week, but are always fun and innovative. Most meetings began in prayer and song and there are often speakers who are never dull. IV and FCA are important in that they help to promote fellowship and they offer a great opportunity to meet people that share some of the same thoughts and views. I encourage anyone who has the slightest interest in these organizations to come and see what FCA and IV are all about. Both offer a greta opportunity to meet people that share the same thoughts and views. For first-year student Carlton Irving, FCA is, "a place I could learn more about God, His world and how He wants to guide me on this campus." The weekly meetings, called huddles, change from week to week, but the activities often include speakers, videos, and songs. "FCA has had a huge impact on my life and I know it has made an impact on a lot of students' lives," said FCA coordinator Kurtis Gentry. Gentry feels his and FCA's shared pur pose is to challenge people to take a truth ful look at their lives and see where they are headed and what God's role will be in their lives. Intervarsity is a little different in that it began abroad, was brought to the United States in 1940, and is promoted world-wide as both Intervarsity and Intercollegiate. Ac cording to IV coordinator Barbara Rice, "IV is a place where people can develop a greater sense of community." At one of the last IV meetings I attended, a speaker read from the Old Testament. I know, the Old Testament equals snoresville for most students, but in IV that is not the case. Instead of just read ing a passage, we interacted with it, adding such comments as "You da man" and "Get a life!"
