THE GUILFORDIAN OCTOBER 2, 1998 Restore pride in our school By Devra Thomas STAFF WRITER Who are you? What's your phone number? Where are you living? What did you do last year? You'd know these things if we had our phone directories and yearbooks. Guilford is a small school, and everyone tends to know ev erybody else. Sometimes, though, you don't know a person's phone number, and you want to remem ber last year's Serendipity through pictures. By now, the student phone directories are here, and every one has a neon pink, spiral bound book sitting near their phone. Why didn't we have these earlier? I know the phone num bers of my best friends, but I don't make a habit of memoriz ing the extensions of professors or fellow classmates. I know that the Office of Stu dent Activities has to wait until we all fill out and turn in the AweriOJUS tuy 2 billion disposable nxiors \yaor, b billion pens are f~/in?iAm v/e^r Me Uyy\Hd sf*fe£. Students know their cor rect extensions the week after they move in, and permanent residence infor mation can't have changed that much. The forms are pre printed; can't they be handed out and returned sooner? - , We got the directories a month after school started, and now only half of them are good for the rest of the year because of all the students that are abroad and will return in two months. Making a yearbook is an other time-consuming process, and our yearbook staff is in sore Forum X L£T /ME ZfUST Jared Axelroc need of people to work. Cory Birdwhistell, last year's senior section editor, begged seniors to turn in pictures and quotes, and she shouldn't have had to do so. A yearbook is the past year in pictures, and if the book doesn't have enough of them, it won't get printed or do its job. I wonder if the reason why we don't have our yearbooks is not just because of understaffing, but because the student body doesn't care enough about memo rializing its past to offer pictures and other remembrances. If the student body doesn't fTl* _ , A * „ _ i one to start ° /* * I • for the environment \ , > v . ; t ; To the Editor: Since everyone has hap pily arrived back on campus and we've had plenty of time to sink into the rig ors of this upcoming se mester, we all need to start to consider environ mental impact at Guilford. Many of us can't even be gin to contemplate how to cre ate a sustainable world, let alone a college campus. So to make things easier for us environmentally ques tioning thinkers on campus, Forevergreen has brought Kevin Lyons to speak about sustain, ability, and self sufficiency. To begin with*%hat we Can do at Guilford is to purchase products with the least amount of packaging, aWd if w.e do, re use this packaging. If Mom sends you a pack f age, use the. box. to-store your books. If Mom happens to in- care more about who we are and were, what will happen to the yearbook (not to mention the Lighthouse , which also had to plead for submissions) this year or next? Are we even going to have one? The yearbook is an art form, and as is the case with the rest of our arts, they will all softly and silently vanish if our commu nity does not start to value and care for them. We must find a way to speed up the process of making our books and find a way to restore pride in our past. . . elude those little Styrofoam "peanuts," advise her to use ! plastic grocery bags that can be reused or to find the new biodegradable packag ing. Thanks to the recy cling club, we are all well aware of what we can re cycle on campus. (And, LETTER TO THE EDITOR no, those green bags are not supposed to be placed in the trash as soon as your RA hands them out.) This is only the beginning. If we aren't careful, this could become a weekly column. Guilford students, faculty, and administration need to take the initiative to form a sustainable campus if we want to survive in our future environment that is plagued with ignorance to wards consumption. Thank you and we hope to see you at* .the Kevin Lyons presentations and JforeverGreen meetings. :; Fogg and ; r JForeyerGreen . ■ ' - - - ■■ - - ■ 9
