Madness must stop
To the Editor:
Every Friday a group of
Guilford students stands in front
of the Federal Building down
town in order to protest the eco
nomic sanctions on Iraq.
Here's why: Over a million
people have died because of the
US-led UN. Estimates reveal
that over 500,000 Iraqi children
under age 5 have died from lack
of access to clean water, food and
medicine.
The US has bombed Iraqi
schools and hospitals and has de-
molished Iraq's
water treatment
facilities. Before
the sanctions,
Iraq maintained
impressive edu
cation and health
care systems. But today Iraqi
children are being denied hope
for normal lives as the level of
depravity their society faces is
horrifying. Denis Halliday,
former UN humanitarian coordi
nator in Iraq, resigned from his
position last October in protest
of the sanctions which he consid
ers to be illegal and immoral.
The current sanctions on
Iraq are, without a doubt, illegal
and immoral. These sanctions vio
late both Geneva Protocol and the

Job well done
To the Editor:
In response to the letter re
garding the article in the Febru
ary 26th issue on Guadalajara, I
would like to point out a few things
from my perspective as an editor,
albeit for one page, on The
Guilfordian staff.
First of all, the assignment,
which I gave Audrey Ross, was to
interview any students
who went on a study
abroad program and to
present "a day in the life"
of that particular pro
gram. She chose to write
about Guadalajara be-
cause she knew some people who
studied with this program. She
was, I might add, the first person
to pick up this article, which I tried
to sell at Guilfordian meetings last
semester as well. The purpose of
articles of this type would be to
educate students about the study
abroad programs offered at
Guilford College. In the end, many
of the programs were not repre
sented at all.
The purpose was NOT to
point out particular incidents and
problems that occurred during one
particular semester. Besides I was
unaware, and am still unaware, of
anything that occurred during the
semester of which the letter
speaks.
The brings me to my second
point. If you have a story, by all
means, give it to the editors of The
Guilfordian. We will try our best
to run it. The Guilfordian is run by a
small group of volunteers. It would
follow that anyone with suggestions
would be welcomed with open arms.
And if you have a story and want to
write, PLEASE do. I hate
having to run AP stories, but
often I have no choice.
As for writers such as
Audrey Ross, they are stu
dents as well. This means
that on top of everything
LETTER

else, they have to write articles that
will be published for thousands to
read each week. It is a frustrating
process because one is never com
pletely satisfied with one's work.
There are deadlines to meet and af
ter that there can be no revision.
Audrey had trouble getting in con
tact with the people she was to in
terview, but ultimately wrote a story
that complied with the assignment I
gave her. I applaud her for that.
I also applaud the efforts of all
Guilford students who volunteer.
I have realized that people who go
out and do things actually help this
college, and those who simply com
plain, do not.
