16 Men's lax drops to Villa Julie 21-11 By Tim McFarlin SPORTS EDITOR The men's lacrosse team for sook Serendipity last weekend as it traveled to Stevenson, Mary land for a match-up with Villa Julie College. The Mustangs made the first 12 goals of the game, putting the game seem ingly beyond Guilford's reach. A fourth-quarter Quaker rally made the loss more respectable in addition to highlighting some of GuilfdVd's (5-8, 0-5 ODAC) strong points. The loss marks the fifth consecutive defeat for the Quakers. Be it a lack of defensive ef fort from the Quakers or just a superior overall outing from Villa Julie, the Mustangs possessed the ball for the majority of the first half. And when they had the ball, they shot it. Goal after goal was scored as the Mustangs found the area directly in front of the goal wide open as a free-for-all. Sopho more goalkeeper Anthony Roman was helpless as he was continu Wayne Gretzky calls hockey a 'hard game' By Jim Litke AP SPORTS WRITER New York (AP) - Wayne Sretzky left hockey the way he ;ame in: head held high and the rigfit side of his jersey still tucked into the corner of his pants. That ait of tailoring was a habit born >f necessity, the only way a scrawny kid routinely playing in leagues against kids four and five fears older could keep the too-big erseys he always wore from get ting in his way. What changed between then and now is that when Gretzky stepped off the rink Sunday, Grretzky was four and five years >lder than anybody else. "Not only am I mentally *eady to retire, I'm physically •eady to retire, too. This is a great ?ame," he said, "but it's a hard jame, too." Everybody said goodbye in ;heir own way. Six-year-old Trevor Gretzky skipped his Little League game ;o see the old man off after all. Vlichael Jordan called during breakfast. People rushing to Madison Square Garden in Rang ers jerseys with "99" stitched on ;he back crossed against the light ally placed in one-on-one situa tions. Finally, after 12 Mustang goals had been scored, senior Ted Long broke the ice for the Quak ers with one of his two goals with 5:58 to play in the second quar ter. Villa Julie tallied again, how ever, to make the score 13-1 as the clock came to a stop at 1:19. With 33 seconds left in the half, sopho more Jason Gauthier picked up his first of three assists as he dished to Long for a second Quaker goal. The third quarter seemed uneventful as VJC's sophomores Travis Williams and Mark Kratsel netted their fourth and third goals, respectively. Junior Andrew Cunningham also claimed his third goal of the game. Sophomore Dusty Ollerhead made the single third quarter point for the Quakers. Just minutes after the Mus tangs opened up the fourth quar ter with Ben Adams' only goal of the game, the Quakers went on a rally. Gauthier, Ollerhead, John in Times Square without getting run down. For one afternoon at least the game with a tough reputatior and the town with an ever tougher one were awash in senti mentality. National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman re tired his number. Teammates gave him a large-screen TV. The Rangers gave him a Mercedes Benz. The P.A. system played ev ery mushy song ever recorded The crowd of 18,200 stood as one nearly every time the puci turned up on the blade of his stick. "Jagr said to me he didn't Please see Gretzky, page 15 Sports Gardner and Charlie Georgopolous all put the ball in the net for the Quak ers before VJC could an swer back with another goal. Gauthier scored a sec ond time, and then Ollerhead found the net for his third goal. Fourteen sec onds later, Gauthier found himself with another op portunity, and turned it into his third and final goal of the game. VJC then went on a 3-0 run to put the Quakers out of commission, but not before senior Fran Randall bounced a hard low shot into the net from near mid-field. Gauthier led Guilford with his team- and career high six points (3 goals, 3 assists), four of which came in the fourth quarter.
