"Guilford College has a long and proud tradition in our basketball program, dating back to our NAIA National Championship in 1973. We want to continue that tradi tion here today." Estes picked up the reins at Furman University in the 1985- 86 season. After a 10-17 debut sea son, Estes coached the team to a 17-12 mark, the first winning sea son for Furman since 1980. Estes collected the first of his two Southern Conference Coach of the Year Awards that season. The 1990-91 season was Estes' best in his time at Furman. He led the team to a 20-win cam paign and to the first NIT berth in Furman history. Estes resigned from Furman in 1994. He returned to coaching last winter at St. Joseph's High School in Greenville, SC. Estes also worked as a commentator for Fox Sports South in his spare time. "If you've been out of coach ing for four years, you're either glad you're out and go on with your life, or you miss it like heck," Estes said at the press confer ence. "I'm one of those guys who was born to coach. This is a great opportunity for me." According to Athletic Direc tor Mike Ketchum, Estes' enthu- Sports siasm for the job was one of the main reasons for hiring him. "The enthusiasm was evi dent in him when we interviewed him," said Ketchum. "A lot of coaches have ideas about how to build a program, but if you have enthusiasm for the job, you can accomplish that goal." Members of the team have been receptive of Estes. "I'm look ing forward to it a lot," said jun ior David Zelickson. " He seems like a real down-to-earth kind of guy. Hopefully he can help us have a better season than last year." The Quakers endured one of the toughest seasons in recent history last year. Riddled with injury and sickness, the team suited up just six players at some games. Estes sees Guilford as a team with a lot of potential. "As I looked at the confer ence (Old Dominion Athletic Con ference-(ODAC)), it's Division 111, but it's pretty good basketball," said Estes. "I was fortunate in working with Fox over the last four years, in that I've done the Division 111 National Champion ship game on television, and I shared the ODAC enthusiasm, got to meet everybody and it's a great conference. Hampton- I COURTESY OF SPORTS INFO Butch Estes was selected to be Jack Jensen's successor Sydney played for the national championship last year. From my way of thinking, if you get to the top of this league, you can com pete for a national championship, and that's special no matter what level you play at." Estes graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1971 with a degree in Physical Education. In 1973, he received a Masters Degree in Administrative Education from The Citadel. 8
