Don welcomes community
By Don McNemar
PRESIDENT
I am delighted to greet you
on this day, the start of Guilford
College's 162 nd year, and I ap
preciate the opportunity given
to me by The Guilfordian to wel-
come the entire
Guilford College com
munity as we begin the
1999-2000 academic
year. I hope you are as
eager as I am.
Summer is a won
derful break, of course,
but the campus gets to
feel a bit empty in Au
gust. I miss the energy
of this vital and engag
ing community. We
have so much to do this
year!
It promises to be a
year in which we can
take on new chal
lenges and seize new
opportunities, a time
for us to devote our
selves to learning,
teaching, and working
for ourselves and for others here
at Guilford.
As we head into a year
leading up to the new millen
nium, we can look forward to
outstanding speakers and per-

Guthrie, the celebrated folk
singer. We will have the once
in-a-generation chance to kick
off a major capital campaign in
support of Guilford. And most
