Guilford is searching for
qualified professors to fill tenure
track positions in the Education
Studies, Manage
ment, and Theatre
Studies depart
ments.
Each year
some of the fac
ulty and staff leave
Guilford, moving
on to positions
elsewhere or into
retirement. Thus
every spring en
tails a changing
of-the-guard as
departments cull
through applications and inter
view new candidates.

On Thursday, March 16, Frank Herreman, Director of
Exhibitions at the Museum for African Art in New York,
presented a slide lecture entitled, "To Cure and Protect: Sick
ness and Health in African Art." The presentation took place
in the Leak Room in Duke Memorial Hall, and focused on
art objects from the Maness, Jr. collection related to women,
healing, and fertility. The collection is on display in Hege
Library through May 5,2000.

Dean Martha Cooley said, "Be
cause Guilford is a small school,
we don't automatically hire in
structors every time there is a va-
quest positions but
do not get them,
due to a shortage
of funds. Position
allotments depend
on current depart
mental enroll
ments as well as
where the admin
istration wishes to
strengthen the
programs in hope
of attracting more
students.

She adds, "Last year we had at
least 12 searches, six of them ten
ure-track. Whereas last year's
turnover was huge, this year is
normal."
The Education Studies
department's need for an addi
tional position dates back to
Ron Byrnes' departure several
years ago. The department has
been in flux ever since, with
only three people at a time
when the department is looking
to expand its certification pro
grams to include life sciences
and mathematics as part of a
U.S. Department of Education
grant, and foreign language via
a consortium arrangement with
UNC-G. In addition, Professor
