Every year. Year in and year out. On behalf of the flight crew of 90.9 WQFS Greensboro, I am very pleased to make a special an nouncement. This is not every year. In fact, this is a special year indeed. The Guilfacdisn Ladies and Gentleman, WQFS IS THIRTY YEARS OLD! And you know what that means, folks. It's time to party. I think Prince said it best when he said, "Let's Go Crazy!" That's right, under the iron fists of WQFS Pro motion Directors Michela Maxwell and Amanda Roop, the manage ment and DJs have planned a weekend of supplemental activi ties as an alternative to the run of-the-mill activities that generally take place during Homecoming weekend. The 30th Anniversary Cel ebration of WQFS will kick off Fri day the 27th of October at 7:00 p.m. with live music in the Under ground, showcasing acts from Guilford College and the local com munity, such as Hooray for Every thing and Little Brother. WQFS is very proud to have Guilford band Cousin Jimmy headlining the show, a new group that has ex ploded onto the local scene, draw ing record attendance at venues such as Somewhere Else Tavern. Cousin Jimmy is by far the best old school rock this college has ever pro duced, packed with hour-long jams and the guitar-humping antics of se nior Ben Shelton and crew. Upping the stakes on Satur day the 28th, WQFS will be pre senting an array of activities to choose from. The live music con tinues on the Founders lawn at 2:00 p.m. with acts ranging from acoustic guitar beauty, such as the incomparable Mary Johnson, to terrifying death-metal. Also on the Founder's Lawn is the WQFS Carnival from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, fea turing booths and shows to satisfy just about any palate. Need advice on your love life? DJ Heidi Cassel will be on the case for free palm reading/astrology. Or you can let Jarrod Axelrod and his circus side show amaze you with acts ranging from contortion to fire juggling to amazing escape artists. Become a punk with Laurah Legend and Nancy Noxious' booth of anarchy Octeter 27, 2000 that will include free punk rock haircuts for the brave and the chance to take a picture with a cardboard cutout of the one and only Sid Vicious. You can even bring old vinyls to be transferred to CD! These are only a few ex amples of the many things you could find happening at the Car nival. Please check it out for one of the most fun/surreal events that Guilford College has ever seen. Also at the carnival, you can get your chance to dunk faculty and staff memebers such as JJ McEachern and Vance Ricks (and a possible Max Carter), as well as students such as Guilfordian Col umnist and WQFS Music Direc tor Laurah Norton or Scrabble- Wiz Zack Hample in the WQFS Dunking booth (sponsored by Union -- quality you can depend on). Looking for something more low-key? Come check out the WQFS History Exhibit in the Founders Commons also at 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Saturday. See old equipment, merchandise, fly ers, and pictures of past DJs as you discover what it takes to keep a station like WQFS open for 30 years. Festivities conclude on Sunday when a reception will be held at the exhibit in the Commons from 11:00 am to 1:00 p.m. Come listen to talks about the history of the station and its importance for Guilford and Greensboro, featuring speakers such as DJ and student Greg Ray, DJ Wesley Elam, and former WQFS Manager Will Dodson. The 30th anniversary of one of the best college radio stations in the country only comes around once. You don't want to be left out, do you? This weekend, do some thing different. Come party with the coolest student organization around. It'll put a smile on your ugly face. *Check posted flyers for spe cifics on bands and times - -in a toi let stall near you!
