To generate donations for the "Our Time in History" campaign, Guilford College President Don New drug policy proposal met with community resistance Mark Merkel STAXT WRITER Brian Dumas, Senate Vice- President and Chair of the Judicial Board, submitted a new drug policy propsoal on November 27th that would dramatically change the cur rent policy. The proposed policy states, "Mandatory removal from campus housing for one full semester, and the remaining length of the present semester for any individual caught using, in possession of, or selling il legal narcotics within any residen tial college building. The student will have 24 hours to vacate the pre mises following conviction from ei ther the college Judicial Board, or an Administrative Hearing Board. If convicted, the student will forfeit monies paid for student housing and no refunds, partial or whole, will be granted. "If a student is convicted of preceding offense for a second time, the student will permanently be McNemar will spend much of his time away from campus for the next 17 months, meet ing with alumni and friends of the college throughout the na tion. Jerry Godard, Academic Dean, will serve as a sort of in terim president while McNemar is away, and will be responsible for the day-to-day opera tion of the college, making any necessary decisions as they arise. Phil Manz, Chief Financial Officer, along with Bobby Wayne banned from Guilford College owned/leased housing. For any drug offense committed on Guilford College property, the Greensboro Police Department will be notified and violators will be prosecuted under North Caro lina State law." This new policy can be found in the Lotus Notes discus sion group, and is quite different from the original policy (found on pages 35-36 of the student hand book). The administration is par ticularly anxious, having received a prestigious Kresge Foundation challenge grant in late Septem ber, which promises Guilford Col lege a $1 million donation only if it can raise $7,816,379 by Jan. 1, 2002. The pressure is high be cause it's an all-or-nothing situa tion -- if the mission is not accom plished, the college receives nil. The "Our Time in History" campaign has raised $33.3 million since it began with the goal set at SSO million by 2002.
