In Her Own Words:
Student Senate President Naz Urooj Responds
to the 9/6 Cuilfordian Senate Article, Editorial
Editor's Note: Following the story
on the cancellation of Senate
elections (09-06-02), several
senators expressed concerns
about the coverage of the elec
tions in the paper. Senate Presi
dent Naz Urooj agreed to a fol
low-up interview, a partial tran
script of which appears below.

Jeremy Bafl: Some of these ques
tions are going to seem incredibly
obvious, but just for the record I'm
going to ask them anyway. Why
was the Senate election cancelled?
Naz Urooj: Because we didn't have
anybody running in opposed posi
tions.
Security Causes Frustration Among Students
Jacob Blom

"Goodbye rent-a-cop, hello
Robocop," said Junior Doug
Robertson.
Guilford College outsourced the
in-house security that had been a
Guilford trademark. In its place, Guilford
hired Allied Security an independent
security contracting service.
Allied Security performs more
responsibilities pertaining to safety
than did the previous security office.
The department therefore changed
its name to Public Safety
The school planned to maintain
a tie between past security and Allied
Security so the new officers would have
guidance, but the previous Director
J: And when was the decision made
to cancel it?
N: We decided during Steering Com
mittee meeting, which is held at
8:30 on Wednesdays in the Senate
office.
J: Who all was involved in the deci
sion to cancel?
N: Well, everybody who is in Steering.
J: And how many people is that?
N: Ten people.
J: I've heard that elections are being
postponed rather than cancelled?
N: Mmm hmm.
J: Have you made a decision as to
when the election's going to be?
N: Not yet Actually I'm going to leave
that to Tamara Asad.
J: Sort of on that same topic, it's been
said that if a position was to be con
tested than an election would be held.
of Security Sylvia Chiteott, decided to
leave for Catawba College before the
school year started. So began the
search for a new Director of Public
Safety
The interim Director of Public
Safety is John Jenkins, also the Asso
ciate Chief Financial Officer for Facili
ties.
He has had his hands full. "It's
been a challenge," Jenkins said. "But,
we hope to have [a full-time Director
of Public Safety] in place in the near
future."
Ame Lundquist, Dean for Cam
pus Life, is also eager to see a full
time Director of Public Safety "My
hope is that we can get stable fofes in
here," she said, "and that they begin
So say a student expresses interest
in a position — of
course —is there a designated wait
ing period to see if anyone will chal
lenge them for that position?
N: Well, the day that we're going to
have elections again. That's the pe
riod. That's it
J: So you can announce that you're
running for a position up until the
day of the election?
N: Yeah. You can even have a write
in.
J: So, as of right now, the ballots are
still open and anyone who wants to
can run?
N: But at this point we haven't de
cided whether we're going to have
elections or not, so I'm not going to
say the ballots are open. Because
we don't have anybody running in
to get to know students."
Because Allied Security officers
have had little experienced guidance,
confusion has heightened. Officers
are rotating in and out (several were
fired and others quit), flustering stu
dents and making both parties un
able to form a bond.
"One of the things that makes
us think that they are not looking out
for us," junior Matt Shefton said, "is
because they are not here long

an opposed position. However, we
do have...what we did was
that.. .well, let's just say you and I
took our time to write the proposal
or whatever. And we got ten people
to sign our proposal. Instead of wait
ing for elections —because we didn't
have a tot of student interest —we
gave you the position that you ran for
Let's just say there were five people
that ran for your position. For ex
ample, Bryan Hall. Only four posi
tions, right? Six people ran for it Most
likely if you were to go through elec
tions, those two people who didn't
get votes would be out anyway We
did offer people who didn't get

enough for us to get to know them."
"I don't think there would be con
fusion if they had a supervisor," said
junior Hall Director Desiree Wilkinson.
Still early in the year, but many
students have noticed tension be
tween officers and students.
"Right now, it feels like [Pub
lic Safety] are the police," senior
Matt Bostick said. "Students don't
have to be archenemies... It could
