Guilford Hires New Security Head Alex Robertson Staff Writer Guilford has not had a direc tor of public safety since the be ginning of this school year. But that will change on Monday, Nov. 11, when Reginald Hayes comes to Guilford. "I think students will be recep tive to hirn. He has a good de meanor," said Dean of Campus Life, Anne Lundquist. "He will fit in well at Guilford." Ludquist, John Jenkins and Community Senate Vice President Tamara Asad were members of the committee that decided to of fer Hayes the position. Jenkins is the Associate CFO for Facilites. Hayes, who is a part time vol unteer basketball coach at the Guilford YMCA, has over 20 years of experience in community cor rections. Hayes has been involved with many organizations, including the Vio lent Crime Task Force of Greensboro and the Center for Community Safety in Winston Salem. A S.A.F.E. Space Recent Guilford activities: Over 30 women from Guilford, dressed in black, participated in a Women in Black demonstration in downtown Greensboro on Wednesday Oct 30. Women in Black is an international organization, founded in Israel, that protests war, rape and "disappearances." Upcoming events: Tuesday, Nov. 12, 6 - 7:30 pm, Gallery. Cathy Hansen, Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, will discuss what to do if you're assaulted, drug-assisted rape, the effects of alcohol on sexual assault, and ways women and men can empower themselves to make good decisions and minimize risky behavior. Friday, Nov. 23 - Saturday, Nov. 24 A Safe Space Conference. FREE and SAFE are sponsoring this sexual assault education conference, which will culminate with a Take Back the Night rally and march through Guilford's campus Saturday night. Before coming to Guilford, Hayes worked as the Director of the Guilford County Day Reporting Restitution Cen ter. There, Hayes headed a small staff and was responsible for overall op eration and administration. Most recently, Hayes has di rected the Fatherhood Connection Program at the Association for the Benefit of Child Development. "Hayes is a caring person with a background in this community," said John Jenkins. "He has more of an educa tional approach to student behav ior, not punitive," said Lundquist. "He believes in teaching commu nity standards to prevent inci dents." With tensions rising between students and the new Allied Secu rity, Hayes' presence and de meanor could have a positive im pact on the Guilford community. "Last year, security seemed like friends. I even watched the World Series with a security guard," said sophomore Adam Joseph. "That would never happen this year." li,'. r- , *i !3j|HGo£ '■' -i Reginald Hayes will assume the position of director of public safety this coming Monday, Nov. 11. That is a posi tion I work closely with. His pres ence will unify the staff and pro vide leadership to the new security," said Lundquist. "The school has been going through lots of changes, with the November 8, 2002 Volume 89, Issue 8 hiring of lots of new staff," said Jenkins. "I think Hayes will be a real asset." Hayes replaces Sylvia Chillcott who headed Guilfod security for eight years. Chillcott resigned to take a similar position at Catawba College, her alma mater. "Not having a head of security has been a real handful," said Jenkins. "We look forward to having Hayes." %mum
