Protests Do It; Coble Withdraws Casey Creel News Editor Republican Congressman Howard Coble withdrew as a com mencement speaker last week after a final push from a fourth of the senior class who protested his February comments sup porting internment of Japanese Americans in World War 11. However, the comments were only of secondary concern for several seniors, who also ob jected to Coble's steadfast sup port of the war against Iraq, and for others who disagreed with his overall conservative voting See Coble, page 3 Adrienne Israel Named New VP, Academic Dean Hannah Winkler Guest Writer The search for the position of Vice President and Aca demic Dean has ended, and the committee has chosen some one close to home. This past Wednesday, President Kent Chabotar an nounced Adrienne Israel, cur rent Interim Vice President and Academic Dean, as the next Vice President for Academic Affairs and Academic Dean. "Well, I'm honored, first of all. I know what a fine school this is. This stewardship is passed on to the next genera tion. I will keep (Guilford's) reputation and promote it," Is rael said. The role Israel will play in the administration is very simi lar to the role she already has, though this time her title is more clarified. She is no longer here for the ambiguous short term. In an administrative lead ership role second only to the President in the building of the curriculum, she will be key in decision-making about the di rection Guilford is to take in the coming years. Israel has been part of the Guilford community for the past 21 years, working previously as the Humanities Division Direc tor while flooding the classroom with her presence.
