Page 2 Greensboro. N.C. Developer chosen to build new on-campus dorms Continued from Page 1 must decide on approving the proposal. It is likely to be accepted, as the Board itself decided Guilford need more housing. The administration will submit the proposal Oct. 9. Though the school has considered building new housing for several years, the decision to review bids from contractors was made only several months ago. In June the Board of Trustees met and agreed that the school needed additional housing. Developers submitted proposals through August. The decision to award Capstone with the contract was made the week of Sept. 20, and the proposal was announced to the student body on Sept. 27 in a community forum. Doss, Lundquist, Varnell, and Boothby present ed the plan, then fielded questions from the audi ence of about 20 students. In the forum, sophomore AnnaMalia Ticknor, representing the student organization Forevergreen, submitted a proposal to the admin istration that the new housing be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-certified. The certification means that the buildings will comply with environmental guide lines set by the U.S. Green Building Council. Construction material, energy use, water efficien cy, and indoor environmental quality are all taken into account. The administration's response was not opti mistic. "I have a hard time imagining being able to afford that," Varnell said. "There are a lot of tough decisions to make." Community Senate's corner space: weekly update A.Q. Adbul-Karim Community Senate President r I 1 he measure of a I man's real charac ter is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out." -Thomas B. Macaulay Welcome to the second Hug a Senator Day, and another opportunity to show our appreciation for these hard working members of our com munity we call senators. To do this I want to quickly run through some recent accomplishments within Community Senate. Last week, Senate approved and allocated a $5,000 budget to our new Intramurals program. Director Mike Dixon (x 2425) has planned the major items of the program for Spring 2005. Also addressed in that meeting were two proposals, one for the Guilford College Bike Club, and the other for the Yellow Bike Program (YBP). Decisions on these to propos als are scheduled to be made on Sept 29. Please see the Senate Board (located near the Founders stairwell closest to the caf) for the most recent updates. This week's Senate agenda was dedicated predominately to discussing the Student Loan Fund Auction (SLFA), a first-of-its-kind program creat ed in 1983 by Community Senate that offers low interest student loans. Also on the agenda is a proposal by WQFS and BUS for the show ing of a film on Afro Punk. Looking ahead to next week, I want to remind you of our secondly monthly Town Hall Meeting taking place Oct. 5 at 6:30 p.m. in Boren lounge. The main topic of discus- NEWS Before the forum, Ticknor expressed her own doubts about the possibilities of the new housing receiving LEED certification. "I don't know if there is a strong administrative commitment ... for hav ing this building certified," she said Junior Joanna Kelly, who lives in an apartment near the construction site, worried that the con struction noise would be disturbing. Construction would begin at 8 a.m. and end by 6 p.m. daily. "Shouldn't you have warned people (who applied to live in the apartments)?" she asked Doss. "It's not fair to us. I don't want to live with construction noises." Doss did not offer a response to her concerns. Attendees also discussed the Program Committee, a group being established to make decisions about the new dorm. The committee will be made up of 10-12 people. No decisions have been made about the mem bers of the committee. It will probably include rep resentatives from Campus Life, Maintenance, Buildings and Grounds, and Academic Affairs, as well as student senators. "It needs to be representational. It needs to rep resent a lot of different groups," Varnell said. Some students worried that student opinions would be under-represented in the committee. Lundquist reassured students that any sugges tions were welcome, and recommended attending a focus group on the project to be held sometime in the near future. Students can express their opinions on the new housing project by meeting with Anne Lundquist, sion will be the proposal for a new dorm (estimated comple tion date set for August 2005) and a wrap-up of the smoking and party policy discussion.
