at Guilford, every element of
the school is new and unex
plored, but as the year
unfolds, the tensions and
complexities of its history
become evident.
Seasoned students are not
immune. Drivers thought they

on July 31, 2003 and
Reginald Hayes, Director of
Public Safety, corrected that
institutional oversight.
The college’s plans this
year build upon key issues in
its past and will color the rest
of your time here. It is in our
collective best interest to
understand what our school
has planned.
Guilford is working its way
out of financial straits. “You
have to have a strong finan
cial plan to keep the college
going,” said Vice President for
Advancement Mike Poston.
“That wasn’t done for the past
30 years.”
President Kent Chabotar,

president for finance and

College, has worked to get

Guilford’s rising enrollment
strained its housing capacity.
The idea to start building addi

established in early 2002, but
the decision culminated in the
completion of the South
Student Apartments by the fall
semester.
Guilford made an appeal to
the North Carolina
Independent Colleges and
Universities group (NCICU),
said Jerry Boothby, Vice
President of Finance and
Administration. This group
would finance the project and
cover all debts obtained dur

The proposal was set to go
ahead as planned, but when
the school showcased its
agenda to the Local
Government Commission, the
commission rejected the pro
posal, saying they did not like
the overall approach.
Instead, the state compro

Chabotar’s Strategic Long
Range Plan (SLRP), now in
its second year, has carefully
mapped out the school’s
finances into 2010.
“Two years ago the spend
ing rate for the endowment
was nine percent,” said Vice
President for Finance and
Administration Jerry Boothby.
“Last year it was seven and a
half percent. For this year we
are working on five percent.”
Keep in mind that the differ
ence between nine percent
and five percent, with a 50
million dollar endowment, is
about two million dollars.

became the new Dean
of Campus Life. Modest, self-
assured, and capable, he
feels prepared to take his new
job head on. With back
grounds in law and student
life, Fetrow excitedly accepted
his position. He already had
new programs in mind.
Born in Toledo, Ohio,
Fetrow was an R.A. for two
years in Manchester, Indiana.
He later went on to get his
Masters degree in History at
Truman State University. In
