The Guilfordian exists to provide a high-quality, reliable, informative and entertaining forum for the exchange of ideas, information and creativity within Guilford Col lege and the surrounding community. General staff meetings for The Guilfordian take place every Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the commons on the 2nd floor of Founders Hall, and are open to the public. LETTERS The Guilfordian actively encourages readers to respond to issues raised in our pages via letters to the editor. Elections will be held on Friday, Feb. 1. Senate positions are open for: Alternative houses Apartments North Mary Hobbs Hall Shore Hall Bryan Hall Milner Hall Sophomore class Senior class Student Athlete GLBTQA Old Proposals Sex Workers Art Show ($2,150): Pride may have other donations coming which would reduce the cost to Senate when they are ac counted for. The event will be Saturday, Feb. 2 in Bryan, Jr., Audi torium Senate will allow one week for input and reflection, and will con tinue discussion on the issue next week. Dean's List Dinner ($750): Concerns about this proposal include: The event is exclusive, which may not merit Senate's support. Senate should be more intentional about spending it's resources. $750 is a lot of money for food. Approved New Proposals Apartments South Representative: Judy Scoville was runner-up in the elections to the former representative, who can no longer serve. Judy Scoville was approved to serve as representative for the Apartments South. Student Residence Council ($5,000-10,000): The SRC has spent most of their $10,000 budget. Some expressed concern about granting them an additional $10,000. It was proposed that Senate grant $5,000 until SRC needs more. Senate will allow one week for input and reflection, and will con tinue discussion on the issue next week. Student Organizations Procedures Reform: Jeremy Bante compared different governing documents and found several contradictions an inefficient procedures. Senate will form an ad-hoc committee to review Senate's govern ing documents and advise Senate about possible changes. Discussion "Good Judicial Standing": It was proposed that Senate define "good judicial standing" for purposes of allowing Senators to hold office to only exclude those receiving a sanction barring students from par ticipating in student activities. Some expressed concern about indi viduals' rights to be comfortable in public discussion, which may include being in the company of perpetrators of various personal assaults. Others expressed concern about individuals' rights to par ticipate in student government. Senate will allow more time for input and reflection, and will con tinue discussion on the issue next week.
