Budget approved; campus
alcohol and drug use discussed
By Megan Feil
Staff Writer
The main topics discussed
at the Board of Trustees meet
ing on Feb. 23 included stu
dents' use of drugs and al
cohol as well as the college's
budget.
Aaron Fetrow, dean of stu
dents, led a presentation on
Guilford's alcohol and drug
issues in response to a request
from the board. A student and
staff panel offered unscripted
information about their expe
riences with the party scene.
"The trustees were sup
portive and thankful to get
a realistic view of drinking
based on our experiences,"
said senior Briarma Robinson.
"We shared personal stories
that didn't necessarily put
ourselves in the best light."
Dry colleges like Earl-
ham and Emory and Henry
were mentioned as a point of
comparison in numbers of re
ported alcohol and drug vio
lations.
"I don't think the trustees
want to make campus dry,"
said senior Chris Lampkin.
"You can get drunk for the
first time in your dorm room
and have your friends look
out for you. If they push
drinking off campus, you can
go to a bar and have the cops
look out for you."
Consensus from the panel
said first-years generally ac
counted for more alcohol vio
lations than upperclassmen.
"Personally I don't drink,
but I think for people who do,
part of the college process is

La^t year, Guilford stu
dents logged over 60,000
community service hours. To
give some perspective, 60,000
hours translates into 2,500
days spent volunteering at
sites like Glenwood Library,
Greensboro YMCA, and
African Services Coalition.
For such dedication to
serving the community, the

STAFF AND STUDENTS
HAVE LUNCH, PROMOTE
NCLUSIVE COMMUNITY
By Jamie Metrick
Staff Writer
It's a Wednesday afternoon, des
ignated community time. Students,
staff and faculty gather in Boren
Lounge to share a meal and get to
know each other. A raffle begins
a little early at the request of some
cafeteria workers. Someone good-
naturedly adds, "Some of us have to
cook dirmer!"
Last Wednesday, Project Commu
nity sponsored Staff Appreciation
Day to thank staff across campus
with food, music and good conver
sation. The event broke up into two
shifts to fit busy schedules; people
came from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and
again from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. As a
result, more staff than students at
tended the first session while the
second shift had more students than
staff. The setup allowed a greater va
riety of people to attend.
Many student organizations
contributed to the event. The pot-
luck-style lunch had casseroles and
curry made by the Cooking Club
and batches of vegan and non-vegan
cookies baked by the Outdoors Club.
Senior Brendan "Kass" James read
attendees' fortunes with tarot cards
while student musicians performed
with acoustic guitars.
Guilford's West African Drum
ming Club also stopped by to per
form some traditional Mali and
Guinean music. The new Slam Poet
ry Club introduced themselves with
founding member Louisa Casanave
performing original slam. Even the
College Democrats were involved;
President Malcolm Kenton came
with voter registration cards.
"I registered one staff member
and helped three others change their
voting information," Kenton said.
"It's cool that C.D. can contribute to
this."
Project Community also handed
out gift bags for staff members that
included scented candles, gift cards
and other practical items. The bags
were decorated by students the pre
vious week and had little messages
of thanks.
When 4 p.m. rolled around, students
