NEWS Recruitment initiative alters goals in light of legal restriction INITIATIVE'S FOCUS ON STUDENT INVOLVEMENT IN ADMISSION PROCESS WILL CONTINUE By Robert Bell Staff Writer For eight of the past 10 years, Guilford College's traditional student headcount has increased — reaching 1,416 this fall. But Guilford Senior and Community Senate President Dana Hamdan believes there might be a better, albeit old-fashioned, way to attract even more students: word-of-mouth recommendations from current students. The initiative was conceived earlier this semester when Hamdan was brainstorming alternative ways students could contribute to "Green and Beyond," Guilford's year-long sustainability theme. The initial incarnation of the project would have provided a $400 incentive to any current Guilford student who recruited another student, providing the student successfully enrolled and remained at Guilford past the Oct. 1 headcount their first year. "What better way to sustain Guilford than for students already here reaching out to bring other students into our community," said Hamdan. "Each of us has an idea, a concept of what the Guilford community is and what kind of person would fit in here. This is our chance to find those students and encourage them to consider Guilford." The initiative was received positively when pitched to senior administrators earlier in the semester, including gamering support from Vice President of Admissions Randy Doss. Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Aaron Fetrow was a part of the initial meeting and expressed support for the idea, despite concerns about the monetary aspect of the proposal. "The compensation part caught me off guard at first," said Fetrow. Here, Perkins and Verdell discuss the relationship between disability and community sustainability with fellow students and visiting exhibition artists Ann Fox and Rich Curtis. By Alexandra Miller Staff Writer While Guilford strives to be inclusive and accommodating for students and staff, one small segment of the community-seems to be overlooked. For the handicapped population on campus, inclusion can be as daunting as the heavy wooden doors blocking their entrance to numerous campus buildings. The final project for Principled Problem Solving (PPS) scholars and seniors Marissa Dungan, Reid Perkins, Darius Verdell, and junior Amelia McLaughlin investigated the accessibility of buildings around campus for students, faculty, and staff who are physically disabled. The group recently presented their findings to the community, with a presentation that scored each building and offered both short and long term recommendations for improvement. Palombo told The Guilfordian that his office could not discuss the circumstances surrounding KieseTs departure, because it would violate state law. North Carolina General Statute 115 protects the confidentiality of all personnel employment records, stating that they cannot be discussed or open to public examination. KieseTs teams compiled a 24-36 overall record in six seasons, including a 0-10 mark in 2010. His 24 wins stand fifth among 22 head coaches in the team's history. "We are grateful for the hard work and enthusiasm Kevin put into coaching our football team the past six seasons," Palombo said. Senior Markas Brunson, former defensive lineman and coaches assistant.
