A modern inland waterway sys
tem that would solve the transpor

costs was visualized by Herbert
Hoover, Secretary of Commerce in
an address before the Mississippi
Valley Association’s ninth annual
convention.
“I believe that the statement that
by the modernization of the Miss-

waterways we shall decrease freight
on grain to world markets by ten
cents a bushel is not far wrong,”
declared Secretary Hoover.

Miss Mary Meinung
Celebrates Birthday
All Salem girls on November IS
joined in sending loving wishes to
Miss Mary Meinung on her eighty-
second birthday. She is now in Me
morial Hospital where she has been
since July when she met with an
accident, but it is gratifying to
know that she is improving.
Miss Mar}' came to Salem 60
3'Cars ago, and althougli she has not
been here continuously since that
she was away.
After teaching in the Academy,
Miss Mary was appointed assistant
in the library, then known as the
“reading room,” located in South
Hall. Since the library has been in
its present location, she has served
with Miss Lehman, Miss Erwin,
Miss Rosanna Blair, and Miss Mc
Millan. During vocations she has
given much of her time to mend
ing books and getting everything
in order for the opening of the
new school term.
Miss Mary is remembered at Sa
lem especially for her faithfulness
and her friendliness. Hers was a
spirit of real service and one knew
tliat she could be depended on to
do whatever she could for the good
of the school. Students have often
remarked about her cheerfulness,
her friendliness, and her interest in
the girls as individuals. These
characteristics have won for her
many friends among the Salem girls,
wlio will always wish her happiness.

Mrs. Bride: “Of course I did. I

Amelia: “Second sight.”—London
