whom reside in the smaller colleges.
Whether this depressing situation is
due to the small endow'mcnts of the
small colleges or due to the inade
quate feeding facilities for Rats in
these colleges, has not yet been de
cided.
Salem, of course, is deeply con
cerned and interested in this prob
lem. Dr. Rondthaler stated that
Tile Home Economics Department
is his strongest supporter in this
movement. Miss Leftwich has agreed
to formulate a new recipe for rat
biscuits which will contain all the
necessary vitamines. These biscuits
are to be concocted by the Home Ec.
l i Class.
An impressive ceremony will be
held at twelve' o’clock P. M. Sunday
night at which time Miss Eleanor
Willingham, Mistress of Ceremo
will contribute the first thimble full
of poison for the proposed recipe
tor Rat Biscuits. The Flags will fly
and tliere will be no classes in honor
of the “Emancipation of The .Col
lege Rat.” We feel sure that as a
result of this movement the majority
of these animals will appreciate
great sacrifice and will be eternally
indebted to Dr. Rondthaler for his
leadership in this campaign.

NON-SENSE
I have a confession to make and
n order to clear my conscience
•omplctely I must do it publicly.
The other day I overheard a conver
sation between Mr. Campbell and
Curly . Here I succumbed to
that low crime of eavesdropping.
The following verbs, adjectives and
pronouns I heard: Says roy j, “Say,
Curly, what do you think of
these long skirts?” “’Tis excellent,”
answers Mr. C., “’Tis only justice.”
Whereupon roy j. didn’t seem to
agree but his words were lost in
Estie Lee’s singing as she passed
down the hall. I could tell, howev
he was of the negative side of the
query. “About bobbed hair,”
Mr. r. j., “how about it?” “How
do you like Rose Ramsay’s?”
a crime answers Curly, “My lost
hope for wimmin’s salvation de
stroyed.” “Curly,” says r. j..
“Think thou there is any chance of
Rosey devoting them to the cause
of science? Maybe a preserving j.
with a label on it bearing such words
as these, might appeal, ‘Pickled Rose
Ramsay’s Braids’.”
My conscience hurt me here, but I
listened again upon hearing them
mention that next year a member of
the faculty would be chosen May
Queen. Hereupon I skiddooed, for
I couldn’t bear to hear the r
mentioned.

In Music Hour
Interesting Demonstration of
Use of Rhythm in Teach
ing Beginners
Miss Angela Dillcr, of the Diller-
Quiiile- School of Music, .of .Ne>v’
York City, assisted Jby Mrs. Kate
Stearns Page, gave an interesting
and delightful demonstration in
Music Hour on Thursday, of a
“First I.esson in Rythm to a Group
of Children.” Since there were no
young beginners available, students
of the College were called upon to
perform as tlie class.
Throughout the lesson Miss Dil-
ler emphasized the importance of
educating rather than instructing the
child; that is, the pupil should be
allowed to do things for himself, rea
son with his own brain rather than
have the teacher tell him everything,
filling his mind with facts. The
child’s interest is captured and .held
by the fact that he does things, is
told what he has done, writes it
down and then when the actual notes
or symbols are placed before him he
recognizes and understands then.
The rythm orchestra is enough in
itself to fascinate the young pupil
and by means of it it is possible, in
a very short time to instill in the
average child a feeling of the rythm,
and to teach him how to count and
the time, bars, notes, rests, etc.
Miss Diller is doing exceptionally
outstanding work in her methods of
teaching beginners in music, and
Salem was quite fortunate to have
her speak here.
