the putz and “Christmas cakes,” are
a part of Salem’s Christmas. Some
of the white ones will have been
made by the veteran “star-maker,” a
genuine artist, now in his nineties,
living in a house that looks as if it
had been taken from the front of a
lovely Christmas card. Others were
brought to Salem from faraway
Herrnhut, in Saxony, the home of
many of the German Moravians. The
shining, many-pointed star is rich in
symbolism. So. too, are the small
candles that are given to each per.son
■it the Moravian Christmas Love-
feasts. These little beeswax tapers,
fragrant and gay in their red paper
fringes, are made deep in one of the
high-vaulted, stone-paved kitchen-
cellars of Salem. They come from
the same old molds that “Christmas
Candles” have come for generations;
they are made with the same imple
ments, in the same way.

that these two young stars will play

On Tluirsday, Friday, and Satur

picture will be accompanied by a

STATE
On Monday, Tuesday and Wednes
day of next week, the State Thea
tre will present “Follow the I.ead-
er.” This is a peppy, up-to-the-
minute presentation which features
Ed. Wynne, musical comedy star
Ginger Rogers, the wide-awake, full-
of-life little star of “Young Man' of
Manhattan,” Stanley Smith, Popular
young leading man, and an unusual
ly able cast.
During the latter half of the
week, the feature picture will be
“Man of the Hour.” The title of
the picture speaks for it, and the
only addition we can make is that
Gilbert Roland, long to be remem
bered for his part in “Camille” and
Barbara Leonard, a newcomer yet
to prove her worth, are to take the
leading roles. Tlie feature picture
will be accompanied by unusually
clever short skits, by brand new
comedies, and the usual news reels.
