The number in the family and the ages of all the chil dren were given to the classes in order to help them in selecting ap propriate gifts for them. Each class responded readily to the request. On Wednesday, December tlie monthly as.sociation meeting of the Y. W.' C. A., will be held ' the recreation room of Louisa E ting Building. A delightful Christ mas party has been planned and is hoped that all members will ; tend. The Social Service group of the Y. W. C. A. made a visit bo the Chil dren's Home Thursday afternoon. Suckers were left for the children as gifts from the girls. A program was arranged and pre sented at the Salem Home on Wednesday afternoon by members of the Social Service group. For the past week members of this group have been collecting cloth ing from the dormitories to be sent to the Crossmore School. Any gar ments that were donated are greatly appreciated. Intercollegiate News Guilford— The Guilford College Library has been presented with a gift of eight thousand dollars to be used in pur chasing books, by the Carnegie Cor poration of New York City. Friday, November 29, marked not only the public annoimeement of this gift, but also the date of the faculty ])lay presented for the benefit of the li brary and the presentation of an art collection by the Art Club of the College. Agnen Scotl- The faculty of Agnes Scott Col lege provided great entertainment, for the student body when they held a mock “open” faculty meeting Wednesday evening. Among the im provements suggested by the tcach- ers were the introduction of “Snappy Stories” and “College Humor” into the library, the abolition of tests (be cause of their bad effect on the health of the teachers), and a sched ule of lecturers which would include Greta Garbo on “Technique.” {Extract from the Guilfordian) “We have in our midst a student who refuses to go back to Salem to see a girl because in the first let ter he got from her after their first date, she didn’t say she loved him ! "Quick, Watson, the smelling salts !” (Now, just where is the old Salem Spirit?) Guilford college girls established an entirely new precedent Thanks giving morning at 11:30 o clock by receiving their favorite “dates” in their rooms (which were garnished and swept for the occasion). Quot ing the Guilfordian, “They did treat their visitors to much candy and goodies, did entertain them with strange music boxes, and did hold much conversation and perhaps handes (all of which did please the men verie much).” N. ACADEMY NEWS Monday, December the sixth, could well be recorded on the calen dar of Salem Academy as the out standing daj' of the Speedball sea son. Not only was there a Speedball game between the “Evens” and the “Odds,” but there was also a speed ball banquet. The game was a smashing victory for the “Evens,” but that does not mean that there wasn’t some real playing on the part of the other team. Pep and sportsmanship were in evidence all through the game. Although the score was twelve to nothing a more exciting morning could not be wished for. The banquet consisting of four courses, also went off with a bang. If a stranger had happened in the dining hall and had seen everyone solemnly wandering around with a glass of water in one hand and a napkin in the other, she might have been slightly startled, and would have thought that she had broken into a nature class as .she heard the expressions, “Where the roses “Oh, here I am at tulips,” “I can't find the water lilies!” To further carry out the “hot house aspect,” flowery speeches were made by the captains of the After dinner the marriage of Miss Tc'nnis Even to Mr. Base ball Odd took place, during wliich a delic wedding cake was taken care of by the guests. Mary Vir I Pendergraph read first “Gate, and Doors,” a poem by Joyce Kilme raise of the kind and courteou, hostler of Bethlehem, who gavi Mary and Joseph shelter in hi, stable and provided a manger bed {o ilVe baby Jesus. Beiilah May Zackery read “A Christmas Parable” by Samuel Crothers, telling of a king, wlio in his blind and selfish areli for the Christmas angels ■erlooked the presence of the Christ Child himself. Ruth Mi ' then read “How the Great Quest Came,” a poem of Edwin Markham, telling how a lowly cobbler enter tained Jesus unaware in, the persons of a wretched beggar, a weary crone and a lost child. • Between these readings a quartet mposed of Mary B. Williams, Anna Preston, Frances Caldwell and Eleanor Idol sang the Anthem “We Three Kings of Orient Are,” and Mary B. Williams sang as a solo “O, I.ittie Town of Betlilehem.’ After the singing of “Holy Night, Silent Night” by the audience, Eliza betih Marx led in prayer, and the service was brought to a close the v/atehword and choral ame Let tlie touch of thy fingers tihrill my life’s strings, and make the music Dr. Rondthaler Returns From Extended Visit Attends Meeting of Southern Associaton of Colleges of Which Salem is Member Dr. Rondthaler has recently re turned from the annual meeting of the Southern Association of Col leges, and Secondary Schools, which was held at the Atlanta Biltmore Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia. He at tended as the representative of Salem College and Academy which have been members in full standing since 1921. Included in the North Carolina Roll of Members of this Association are: U. N. C., Duke, Davidson, Meredith, Wake Forest, N. C. C. W., Elon, G. C., Guilford, Catawba, Lenoir Rhyne, and N. C. State. The list takes in only four-year stand ard colleges. There are any number of Secondary and Teachers’ Train ing Schools in the membership, but the significance for Salem lies in the observation that there are only three other colleges for women on the entire North Carolina list. Salem’s membershijj is an honor; the appreciation for which shoidd be coupled with the gratitude due to its President who made possible this great honor.
