SOCIETY
HICKS-WILLIAMS
Tlie recent marriage of Miss Min
nie Hicks of Biscoe, North Carolina,
to Mr. Ralph Watson Williams of
Atlanta, Georgia, comes as a sur-
pr'.se to the bride’s many friends at
.Salem and elsewhere. The marriage
was solemnized in a ceremony of un
usual beauty August 22 at 5 o’clock
in the Page Memorial Church in
The bride entered to the strains
of the Bridal Chorus from Lohen
grin. She was given in marriage by
her uncle, John Hicks, of Raleigh.
Miss Julia Hicks, of Biscoe, sister
of the bride, attended her as maid-
of-honor. Little Miss Bertha Gar
rett, of Atlanta, Ga., niece of the
bride, was ring bearer.
The bride wore a lovely gown of
blue lace and velvet made on close
fitting lines with a short train. She
wore a matching hat of blue velvet
triinmtd with an ostrich plume. She
carried a shower bouquet of roses,
orchids and valley lilies.
Miss Hicks attended Salem Col
lege three years and was a charming
member of the class of ’32. She was
also a member of the Beta Beta Phi
sorority.
year is given as a memorial to
Carefree Vacation-Days, which
beloved friend passed out of
the picture with today, the first
day of school.
With the passing of this
dear friend go our uncontrolled
sorrow at her unlooked-for de
parture and our deep regret
that she did not remain witli
us longer. A lovely, irrespon
sible young lady, she brought
joy, pleasure and happiness
with her wherever .she jour
neyed. She was universally
welcomed as “a jolly good fel
low,” and the students of Sa
lem as a body mourn her loss.
But because she has passed
awav, let us not mourn her too
much. After death, may she
not be lost to us, but may she
attain immortality in another
friend, Steady School Days.
May we see her bright soul an ’
gleaming smile ever-present in
lier transmigration. Long may
her spirit live and wave in the
heart of School-Days !

ACTION OF TRUSTEES
GIVES SALEM SMOKING

precedence in consideration of any
serious problems.
“n. That the Trustees are e
estly desirous of sustaining student
honor through the Self Government
Association of Salem College.
“6. That they believe this honor
is seriously and unnecessarily
periled in certain aspects of the
.'■moking problem.
“7. That they definitely desire
discourage smoking, but equally de
sire to bring the matter out into
the open, believing that secrecy,
sneaking and hiding are full of phys
ical and moral peril.
“8. That the Board of Trustees
recognizes with all seriousness the
problem of its responsibility to
rents and holds that the question of
a personal practice such as smoking
should be first of all a matter of
openly arrived at counsel, advice
and expression reached between pa
rents and daughter by free and con
fidential conference between them.
The Board deplores the fact that
this has so often evidently been
tirely or largely lacking upon this
particular subject between parents
and daughters. It desires and firm
ly rquests that parents and daugh
ters before the beginning of the term
bring this problem into the open
between them, and it earnestly
vites parents to communicate to Sa
lem College special and personal
views upon the subject of smoking,
and the Board pledges its sincere co
operation to the best of its ability,
in honoring in individual cases such
individual desires and views. By this
“co-operation” the Board means
that it regards the expressed and
earnest desire of parents arrived a
openly between themselves and thei
daughter to become therafter a mat
ter of honor and loyalty On the part
of the daughter, and in this spirit
the Board will encourage and coun
sel through all means within its
power any individual student con
cerned, BUT that it cannot encour
age spying upon and secret surveil
lance of individual pupils. Ev
student must act upon her honor
wards her parents’ expressed wishes.
9. That the Board suggests for
year’s trial in such ways as shall
secure the hearty eo-operation of
Student Self Government, a place
set apart where and only where,
■smoking is permitted at the follow
ing times:—7:50 to 8:30 a. m.; 1 :20
to ]
) 7:15
0. That smoking be prohibited
elsewhere upon the campus, also
upon the streets and in all public
places.
“11. That, as heretofore, the
)stess' sanction when visiting is not
[perseded by these provisions.
“12. That this procedure being
granted on trial only for the next
ensuing two semesters is then sub
ject to oificial review and appraise
ment by the Board of Trustees with
the authorities of Student Self Gov
ernment jointly.
“13. The Board selects and ap
points a Special Committee on ac
tive eo-operation with Student Self
Government in this whole problem,
and with all other parties concerned,
to consist of seven members of the
Board and to include the full alum
nae representation of Board mem
bers. The Board particularly de
sires and requests this Committee to
render active service with regard to
all phases of this question during the
ensuing college year.
“ll. The Board particularly and
firmly states that these findings and
this ruling are expressly limited to
Salem College, and do not in any
way relate to Salem Academy, where
smoking is severely and entirely pro
hibited.”
