That the Trustees are e estly desirous of sustaining student honor through the Self Government Association of Salem College. “6. That they believe this honor is seriously and unnecessarily periled in certain aspects of the .'■moking problem. “7. That they definitely desire discourage smoking, but equally de sire to bring the matter out into the open, believing that secrecy, sneaking and hiding are full of phys ical and moral peril. “8. That the Board of Trustees recognizes with all seriousness the problem of its responsibility to rents and holds that the question of a personal practice such as smoking should be first of all a matter of openly arrived at counsel, advice and expression reached between pa rents and daughter by free and con fidential conference between them. The Board deplores the fact that this has so often evidently been tirely or largely lacking upon this particular subject between parents and daughters. It desires and firm ly rquests that parents and daugh ters before the beginning of the term bring this problem into the open between them, and it earnestly vites parents to communicate to Sa lem College special and personal views upon the subject of smoking, and the Board pledges its sincere co operation to the best of its ability, in honoring in individual cases such individual desires and views. By this “co-operation” the Board means that it regards the expressed and earnest desire of parents arrived a openly between themselves and thei daughter to become therafter a mat ter of honor and loyalty On the part of the daughter, and in this spirit the Board will encourage and coun sel through all means within its power any individual student con cerned, BUT that it cannot encour age spying upon and secret surveil lance of individual pupils. Ev student must act upon her honor wards her parents’ expressed wishes. 9. That the Board suggests for year’s trial in such ways as shall secure the hearty eo-operation of Student Self Government, a place set apart where and only where, ■smoking is permitted at the follow ing times:—7:50 to 8:30 a. m.; 1 :20 to ] ) 7:15 0. That smoking be prohibited elsewhere upon the campus, also upon the streets and in all public places. “11. That, as heretofore, the )stess' sanction when visiting is not [perseded by these provisions. “12. That this procedure being granted on trial only for the next ensuing two semesters is then sub ject to oificial review and appraise ment by the Board of Trustees with the authorities of Student Self Gov ernment jointly. “13. The Board selects and ap points a Special Committee on ac tive eo-operation with Student Self Government in this whole problem, and with all other parties concerned, to consist of seven members of the Board and to include the full alum nae representation of Board mem bers. The Board particularly de sires and requests this Committee to render active service with regard to all phases of this question during the ensuing college year. “ll. The Board particularly and firmly states that these findings and this ruling are expressly limited to Salem College, and do not in any way relate to Salem Academy, where smoking is severely and entirely pro hibited.” ENGRAVING FOUNTAIN PENS MEMORY BOOKS CIRCULATING LIBRARY RADIOS—KODAKS Watkins Book Store HINES EXAMINATION TIME Just now we invite College Girls to examine HINES smart, attractive Fall Shoes. $7-50 to $j2
