Page Four. THE SALEMITE Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1931, AT THE THEATRES CAROLINA Claudette Colbert, the charming Krench-American girl who graduated to films from the stage and has fame in such fine productions “Manslaughter,” “Young Man of Manhattan,” and “The Big Pond,” gives a convincing and entertaining performance in “Secrets of a Sec retary” being shown on Thursday, F'riday and Saturday of this -week. The story is of a wealthy New York society girl who marries an Argentine fortune hunter—and loses Iiim when her father’s death leaves her penniless. She is obliged to take a position as a social secretary, thereby opening the way for a num ber of exciting adventures which make this a fast moving, well plan ned film. Georges Metora, a new comer to the talkies, gives an inter esting portrayal of the villainous husband. The first of next week brings the long-awaited Joan Crawford picture. “Thi.s Modern Age.” This story of Paris revellers caught in the scintil lating glow of modern life has much to recommend it from merely an ocular point of view; it presents Miss Crawford in a bewildering cession of charming frocks, sport costumes, and evening dresses. It carries a supporting cast of such tables as Neil Hamilton, Pauline Frederick and others. STATE “The Phantom of Paris,” show ing on Wednesday and Tlmrsday of this week brings the beloved John Gilbert to his many admirer.s in a role that is both different and diffi cult. The story is laid against a Paris background that is unusual in , itself and the plot which unfolds smootlily and at times quite unex pectedly promises real entertain ment. Friday and Saturday brings Tom Tyler in “Partners of the Trail,” a real thriller for those who may still care for “westerns.” “Waterloo Bridge,” which is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, September l i-15, far exceeds its outward appearances as a good pic ture. The ca.st is not an outstanding one although it include.s Mae Clarke, a former star who is making a come back, but this fact, in view of the show’s merits as to filming and dra matic worth, may be a relief from the scores of weak pictures that are sustained only by the presence of some star performer in their casts! Here one may depend upon the true merit of the film itself rather than on the reflected glory of a strong “star” in a weak production. SALEM TENDERS GREET INGS TO OLD AND NEW ;):1.5-Surprise Party.
