DEAN VARDELL SPEAKS
IN CHAPEL
(CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE)
('ars.ir’s conviction that Cassius wai
a (lanf^crous cliaracter if he was nol
touclicd l)v music. Anotlicr passage
from the Merchant of Venicp re
vcalid the same idea. However,
Shakes))care cliil not regard all mus
ic hating pcojjlc as being utterly dc
])raved, for two of his characters
Otiielh) and Hotspur from Henry
If’, who had rather liear his dog
liowl in Irisli, tlian a lady sing in
M'elsh, both disliked music.
Xi-xt, Dean Vardell j)ointed out
how well acquainted the great dra
matist was with the teelmical side of
music. That he a])i)reeiated rhythm
is shown in a speech of Richard II,
in wliicli the imprisoned man is an
noyed by a lack of good time in a
song Ik; hears. A ))assage from
Ilenrj! II wliicli compares dying with
the base cadcnecs of a harmonious
musical composition, reveals Shakes
peare’s love of liarniony. In regard
to cluirds, he once told a bachelor
friend that child, mother and fatlicr
were three notes blended into one
clmrd. Shakespeare also knew well
the instruuK'nts of his day, as we
can see from his composition of tlu;
tliundering tones of an organ, to a
liuman voice in tlie The Tempesi.
and a description of the jilaying of
a liarpsicbord in liis 128th sonnet.
Knowledge o f orchestration i s
found in a w'll known jjassagr from
Ilamlct, in which a concordance of
flute jilayers arc given a lesson by
Ilamlet himself.
Dean Vardell closed bis lecturc,
which was cut short by time, in show
ing by a scale chart liow well
.Shakes))earc Iiad known his scales,
as is found in his Taming nf the
ShrcK', in tlie scene between Bia-nca
and her music teacher, a disguised
lover.
As an adequate conclusion to this
enlightening lecture, Dean Vardell
])layed as recessional, one of Sbakes-
Dcares songs, “It Was a T.over and
.His Lass.”'
