Among those he
ceptional ability
on tlie faculty of
the college. Upon
seeing this pro
fessor. who to.
many years had
been teaching
Greek, the rich
alumnus remurlted, “And are you
still teaching Greek?" the Implica
tion being that the time devoted
to that task, a rather Impractical
one at best, could have been other
wise devoted to a more successful
career. The Greek professor thought
for a moment, and then replied,
“No, I have spent some time teach
ing young men and women, but I
begin with Greek.”
In a charity hospital an exam
ination took place In the presence
of nurses and internes. The head
physician addressed a young girl
In a way which caused one of the
Internes who could stand tha In
human method of his superior no
longer, to exclaim: “See here, are
you talking to a dog or a human be
ing?” The most Interesting thing
about this experience was not only
the nerve of the young Interne, but
the absolute surprise of the chief
of staff. It was a surprise to him
that he had been violating any law
of common etiilcs.
An odiclal In a large corporation
recently remarked to the writer:
“We are looking for a machine In
the form of a man to do a certain
piece of work.”
Much has been written lately in
criticism of the machine age. Among
the arguments advanced were that
the age of machinery has displaced
manual labor. Today many a ma
chine displaces from ten to twenty-
five men. These men, thrown out
of employment, must find work else-
wnere. wlilch cr’-patly aggravates :lie
labor iiroblem. Another argument
has been that the constant attend
ance upon a machine enhances the
dangers Incident to a monotonous
rnd routine type of work, thus de-
nfPoyIng all Initiative.
One very Just criticism, which has
received vory little attention. Is the
machine. Is it not true that men
are more and more becoming like
Iht* iiuiclilncs tiiey control? An In-
(lilTVrenl, altnosi callous attitude
toward the human element Is a fac
tor which may seriously retard the
development of our economic re
covery. May this danger be ov«i>
come before it Is too late.

OURS IS THE AGE OF
STEEL
raoved
When nlstorians,
from 1933 as we are from the cavi
write of the twentieth century, they
will group many words under one:
STEEI.. For this is the Age of Steel.
Steel gives us tools to cut and to
grind our meat, grains, and herbs; to
break the soil, to bite deep holes into
the earth. Steel engines run our er
rands over oceans,, across valleys,
through the air. Where once teepee
poles hou.sed men under skins, now
steel girders, veneered with stone and
brick, tower into mountainous cities.
And the shadowy flicker of Indian
campfires leaps to the rhythm of pant
ing furnaces making Steel. Steel . . .
everywhere, Som men would call it
mastr, some call it slave.

SNIK’S
Once again we are standing at the
portal of an opening year. New fields
of opportunities lie ahead awaiting
exploration. What we will find is up
to ourselves to determine. It is true
that we must dig—dig to unearth the
treasures, for nothing can ever be
gained without honest endeavor. As
Henry Van Dyke has said:
“Heaven is blessed with perfect rest.
But the blessing of earth is toil.”
Toil, however, does not mean drudg
ery. The great man is one who en
joys his work, who finds in it ad
venture, mystery, an outlet foi
ideas, a realizaion of his ideals, that
is, in one word—satisfaction.
