Babylon arid denounces man, saying,
“I repent of dese people dat I have
made, and I will deliver dem no more.”
The humor of the play is not forced,
but is the natural spontaneous out
come of the simple, sincere, and child
ish Negro temperament.
The transitional element of the var
ious scenes which shift from heaven
to earth and from earth to heaven, i.s
the Negro spirituals. These run
hand in hand with the thought of the
play so that the scenes seem to emerge
effortless, from the music. These old
spirituals prepare the listener emo
tionally for the dramatic movement.
“The Green Pastures” is a genuin
work of art. It establishes a sym
pathetic understanding of the unpre
tentious naive negro.
