MEINUNG SPEAKS ON INFLUENCE OF BIBLE IN ART (Continued From Page Oa-e) tures carrying out Biblical themes Ilis “Flight Into Egypt,” “Last Supper” and “Crucifixion” are among the more outstanding of his works. There were many great fifteenth century painters, but the greatest painters of this era, and perliaps for all time, were Leonard da ■ Vinci, Raphael, and Michael Angelo. In da Vinci’s paintings one sees bis mag- nificient of light and shadow, and also a naturalness which is missing in the works of earlier painters.. Da Vinci, besides being a painter, was a sculptor, architect, scientist, mathematician, goldsmith, and en gineer. Such was the man who paint ed “The Last Supper,” a painting which embodies every principle of art. Other religious paintings by da Vinci are “The Virgin, Child, and St. Anne”; “The Enunciation”; and “The Adoration of the Magi,” which was never completed. Baphael, who achieved more soft ness of tone and naturalness in his works than any of the other Re naissance painters, is famous for his “Madonna of the Chair”; “The Holy Family”; “St. Paul in Ath ens”; and many other religious I>aintings. Michael Angelo, primarily known a.s a sculptor, was also a master ar tist. The beauty of his work is seen in the Sistine Chapel murals, which portrays Old Testament Stories. Going to the German School, one finds Holbein and Durer. Durer worked chiefly in etching and wood blocks, while Holbein is noted for his paintings, two of which are “Christ Before Pilate” and “The “WHAT IS WORSHIP” SUBJECT OF CHAPEL TALK (CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE) vilities that correspond to the deep; infinite Spirit of God. Therefore, worship is one of the noblest activi ties we can enjoy. There are four expressions of worship. Thanksgiving statement our needs; kindling of emotion; and an exaltation of spirit coming from the realization that Christ reigns in Heaven. There are many forms of worship but these four expressions should al ways be present. Someone has said that Silence, Prayer, and the Cele bration of the Holy Communion are the three most significant forms. If we worship as we should, we can come to realize that God is a reward- er of them that seek Him. Holy Family. ’' The famous Dutch painter was Rembrandt, who pointed many love ly pictures, “Visitation of the Vir gin ti Elizabetli” and “Simon in the Temple “being two in which he portrays religious subjects. El Greco and Murillo, seventeenth century Spanish artists, are both justly famous although their works are quite unolike. In El Greco’s works one finds a supernatural light emanating from the Christ Child; in all his paintings there is an uncanny presence of supernatural light. Mu rillo, however, follows the Italian school in that his paintings are more emotional and natural than those of El Greco. ifr. Oerter showed slides of tlie pictures of these famous artists. The illustrations came from the Metro politan Museum of Art in New York, and were authentic copies of the original painlings.
