$100,000 INSTITUTION
TO BE CONSTRUCTED
Over Half Needed Sum Has
Been Subscribed
Dr. Eobert B. House, dean of ad
ministration at the University of
North Carolina, spoke on “The In
side Story of Education,” in Wed
nesday morning chapel.
Mr. House stated that he who real
ly strives with the right goal in
view may hope ultimately to be
able to be a saint, scholar, and artist
all fused into one living personality.
Dr. House used the life of Pader
ewski and the founding of Salem
College to illustrate his talk.
Dr. House was introduced by Eth
el Highsmith, who represented the
Scorpions who always have charge of
chapel on Funders’ Day. After the
address, new members of the Scorp.
ion Society were stung.
Another feature of the chapel ex
ercises was an organ solo, “Leg
end,” by Bonnet, played by Anna
Withers, an organ major.
Plans are now being made for a
new library at Salem. $100,000 is
needed for the construction and
equipment of the building. Over
half of this sum has already been
subscribed by members of the board
of trustees and local alumnae.
The building is to be located on
the corner of West and Church
streets, just opposite Alice Clewell
Building.
The building will be brick, with
the roof matching the other old
buildings in Salem. The library will
qxtend 102 feet along Church street
and 72 feet and 10 inches along
West street. Topography of the
land will provide for the building
being about 3 1-2 stories high on
West and Church streets and four
stories high in the rear. When com
pleted the building will provide space
for 80,000 volumes.
In the basement there wiU be an
assembly room with a fire-place in
the west end. There will be also
the stock room, ladies’ lounge, small
kitchen, and a book receiving room.
There will be an old-fashioned man
tel and fireplace in the ladies’ lounge
on this floor.
It is hoped that everyone will re
spond with donations to insure com.
pletion of the project as soon as pos
sible.
