In 1927 the first May Day was held on lower campus, and since then has become one of the outstanding Salem traditions. From the college newspaper of 1927 the following description of May Day was taken: “The Queen of May, Bessie Clark (now Mrs. Sam Ray, of Leaksville entered majestically, pireceded by two small children, *Norman StoclS- ton and Ann Rainey, who carried baskets of flowers.” Two heralds. Miss Mary Duncan McAnally and Mary Audrey Stough (now Mrs. John Kimbrough, of Davidson), announced the queen’s approach. The maids of the court, dressed in a shaded rose taffeta dresses and carrying large hats filled with spring flowers — the dresses were up to the knees in front, with hoops on the hips and waistlines in the same place . . . descended the hill and stood on either side of the queen in the following order: Mstry Johnson (now Mrs. Deryl Hart, Durham); Sara Kincaid (now Mrs. D. Mil-stead of York, S. C.) Louise Thompson (now Mrs. Charles Creech of this city), LaVeme Ware (now Mrs. 6. H. Simpson, Greensboro); Frances McCormick (now Mrs. W. L. Allgood); Elizabeth Sifferd now Mrs. Roy B. Kneeberg, Asheville); Pearl Fishel (now Mrs. Homer Houchins of this city); Louise Cul ler, maid of honor, (now Mrs. W^il liam Fulp of Kernersville); Doris Wooten (now Mrs. Kestler, of High Point); Elizabeth Hastings (now Mrs. Henry Brown McCorkle of this city); Julia Daniels (onw Mrs. Mack Pridgen, Elm City); Cam Bo ren (Mrs. Hoyt Boone, Greensboro); Jiennfi.e Wolfe (hiow Mrs. Vernon Stanley, Charlotte); Isabelle Dunn (now Mrs. Joseph Mauze, Jr., of Huntington, W. Va.); Anna Pauline Shaffner (now Mrs. Ronald Slye, Jacksonville, Fla.” Thus ended the first Salem May Day. This is the last issue of the Sale- mite under the dire^otion of this year’s staff. Next week, Eloise Sample will take charge of the pa per. Election of a new Business Manager will be held Monday at 1:30. The men of the faculty are acting as ushers today.
