Friday, March 25, 1938. THE SALEMITE Page Three. SIGNS OF SPRING JOimiffAIi^SENTIIfEI. STAFF PHOTQ JEANNE BRADSHAW, PEGGY BEAWLEY, AND VIRGINIA SISK WADING IN THE CREEK DOWN IN MAY DAY DELL. SALEM’S EMMA BROWN GRANTHAM Emma Brown Qrantham is the girl who attends all important functions armed with that deadly instrument of torture, a camera. She often feels when she’s playing hockey that that would be a good time to get some ac tion pictures. Playing goal guard can be quite montonous. She likes to play basketball and volley iball, in fact she likes all the sports Salem offers and more besides. Her tennis is better than average and .>ihe can swim. One of her am bitions is to learn to dive. Mountain climbing is something she enjoys do ing but she would rather ride horse back. You see animals, and in par ticular horses and dogs, are her best friends. Nothing could be better than owning a horse and at least one dog and living in a small home in the country near water and mount- tains. Then she could enjoy fishing too. We have already mentioned one of her hobbies, she seems to have quite a few. ghe likes to spend her spare time procrastinating for one thing. She used to collect stamps, but now she collects poetry and jingles. Browning and Shelley are her fav orite poets. We heai Miss Grantham herself indulges now and then in writing a poem or two. She has two scrap books which sound very inter esting. In one .book she collects pic tures of famous people, in the other, landscapes and the other pictures of animals. You might thin]^ Emma grown was a music student, she likes music so much. “The Blue Danube” and “Tales from Vienna Woods” are her favorite songs. She seems to like blue whether in songs, cars, or just as a color. Lawrence Tibbett’s sing ing charms her at any time of the day, but her roommate’s doesn’t at all. She is quite independent in the clothes she wears, she hates sissy things, high heels, and hats, though she loves pants. A diet of milk, apples, deviled crabs, steak and mushrooms, and any kind of hot bread would keep her happy almost indefinitely. She loves to travel. She wants to go to iCalifomia and Australia. Trains lull her to sleep and she al ways has wanted to travel by boat. Her even temper and unselfish spirit make her a great asset to the galem campus. “I’ve been thinking it over,” said the husband, “and I’ve decided to agree with you.” “That won’t do you any good,” said his wife. “I’ve changed my mind. ’ ’ VOLLEY BALL ‘‘ Smack it gal, smack it! Use both hands! Jump! It won’t hurt you! Help it over!” These words with illustrative gestures are heard fre quently in the gym now. Perhaps you’ve learned by now that we-re playing volley ball. But I ’11 bet you don’t know why. This back-straight ening, tummy- flattening exercise gets our fair lassies in trim for those sweltering days on the tennis courts —• and incidentally, for the dance floor. You fellows who think that this is a sissy’s game — just come down and we’ll show you. It takes the power behind a Grantham serve to get that ball over the net. And it takes the quickness of a Baynes to knock it back over. Add to these the squeals of Holbrook to make the game complete. THEY SAY THAT IT IS SPRING WITH THE BIG LEAGUE BASE- BALL CLUB The annual spring scramble of the sixteen big league ball clubs is un der way with the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Browns and Detroit Tigers set ting the pace. Each of the three teams has a clean record, but there are weakening forces. The Cubs have played only three times and the Tigers but once, while the Browns are enjoying the rare atmosphere of first place on the strength of four victories, three of them scored over Tulsa of the Texas League and one over a semi-pro out fit. The New York Giants are second. They have won all but one of their eight games and have scored seventy- six runs, more than any other Na tional League team. The Cincinnati Reds are third with five victories and one defeat. The Giants and Reds have had a great success with National League teams. Each club has won all three of its games against National League teams and the Giants have also taken three out of four from American League rivals. The Philadelphia Athletics have played the most games (11), scored the most rung (88), and had the most runs scored against them (101). They have won only six of their games. The New York Yankees and the Washington Senators are tied for fourth place. K & W RESTAURANT 422 N. Cherry St. Winston-Salem, N. 0. —There ’a gonna be a horse shoe con test soon. We hear that State college had some holidays. Traveler; W'hen I was in England I saw a bed twenty feet long. Friend: That sounds like a lot of bunk to me. WINSTON-SALEM INTRODUCING A RURAUSTIC SPORT at What’s this I hear about a horse shoe tournamentt How crude! Do Salem girls really pitch horseshoes t Yes, Salem girls really do least, some of them. Of course those fastidious ones still cling to their basketball, hockey, and knitting, but those few, more ruralistic, find that in the Spring — — —. And this accounts for the iron stobs you stumbled over just outside the “Hut” in your hurry to get to Gym — pardon me, “Physical Educa tion Class — on time, and those aw ful “clangs” so disturbing to Bit ting’s afternoon nappers. But what about the tournament? when? where? I’m not fastidious may I join. I can’t play, ibnt I’ll try anything once. If you’re no good, you’ll be out after the first go 'round anyway. So get a partner — or be snootie and play by yrouself — or both —' and sign up on the near esti and moat cionvenient bull^tim board. Horseshoe pitching — Salem’s la test and most exciting sport! prac tice up a bit, who knows, you may be Salem’s future horseshoe champion! Mummy, is it correct to call a man born in Poland a Pole?” “Of course, my dear.” “Then I suppose a man born in Holland is a Hole.” Teacher; “Johnny, take this sen tence, ‘I led the cow from the pas ture.’ What mood?” Johnny: “The cow, ma’am.” “Why should you ride a mule if you wish to be rich?” “Because you are no sooner on than you are better off.” If flies are flies because they fly, And fleas are fleas because they flee, Then bees are bees because they be. SKIING IS NEW TROPICAL FAD Skiing hae arrived in subtropical Hawaii. The bachelor members of the Hawaii gki Club will admit only women into the club who can survive the two-day hike to the 7,000 foot level on Mauna Kea, an extinct vol cano. A heavy snow fall on Mauna Kea, which rises 14,00 feet above the is land Hilo’s palm-fringed:shores had promoted, several expeditions this year to skiing grounds, which are said to be excellent. There are no ski “trains,” just an automobile road to the mountain trail. Hikers usually spend the night at a national park roadhouse, con tinuing the next day. Mauna Kea has a snow mantle un til June each year, so the skiing sea son will continue for several weeks, yet.
