Page Four. THE SALEMITE Friday, October 13, 1939. ALL PLAYERS ON' THE FIELD! By Lillian Lanning Sallie Emerson With this familiar call from Miss Applebee, we hockey campers strug gled forth from our cabins in spite of stiff muscles which groaned for rest. We donned all the warm cloth 68 that we had with us and grabbed a hockey stick. The only time we laid the stick down wa-s during meals, and confidentially we saw a few sticks in the dining room. Miss Applebee and her other Eng lish coaches, who had just come over on the “ Aquitania, ’ ’ believed in getting an early start. When the bell at the Lodge rang at eight o’clock in the morning, we really picked up our feet and ran to break fast (being 25 degrees it was too cold to dally on the way). At nine- twenty we assembled in the meet ing room for almost an hour’s lecture on hockey theory. Then at ten o’clock we went out on the field to see if our theory worked in some excellent stick games taught by Mrs. Cram Barry, manager of the camp. From ten-thirty until eleven-thirty or twelve everybody jriayed in match games, and we didn’t use those sticks for “milk stools” either. Miss Applebee, as you know, has a passionate dislike for “milk stools.” At twelve o’clock every body “popped off and rested a bit’’ until lunch. SPECIAL 69c ALLIGATOR SHOES ARE THE THING THIS YEAR H I N E’ S ATHLETIC MANAGERS NAMED In a recent meeting of the Ath letic ssociation two vacancies on the council were filled. These were Golf Manager, Betsy Moffit; and Swimming Manager, Chubby Hayes. Betsy has taken an active interest in golf since she eiltered Salem last fall, becoming one of our most out standing golfers. (Maybe our faculty stars taught her the fine points?) In our tournament last spring she ranked among the lowest scorers, and in' her home-town tournament this .summer she was crowned champion. As golf manager, she succeeds Feggy Jones. Chubby is indeed well qualified for her post as swimming manager, hav ing jjassed her water safety instruc tor’s course this summer. There’s no doubt about her being fond of swimming, either — Bemember that midnight escapade last year? Chub- by’s all for swimming, — any time, any place. crosse was taught, and after this we had more stick work and then an other game from four-thirty until five-thirty. If one of the instructors said we were doing “mach betta” (much V>etter) we really felt wonder ful. After a good hot shower, we dressed for supper. Then — well can you imagine that your southern lasses from Salem went to bed for a well-earned rest (but not until we did English folk dancing until 9 or 9:30). Since we girls from the heart of Dixie were not accustomed to the cold weather, we slept two in a REYNOLDA GRILL 853 Reynolda Road ‘ ‘Where Your Food Is Ptepared Before Your Byes In the Kitchen of Tomorrow.” WELCOME I To Piccadilly Grill, where j you may drop in any time for a sandwich or a feast.
