Peige Four. THE SALEMITE Friday, October 20, 1939. ATHALETIC SAL Our hikers turned agrarian and visited the tobacco market on one of their special trijw Tuesday. The trip seems to have had more of in terest than just the auctioneering too — namely, the guides. (How ’bout this, Phyl Utley?) The hikers are also planning trips for later in the year, to the ice cream plant, Eeynolds Factory, and other points of interest. Better come along — Maybe those places will have some cute guides, too. Did you hear about the energetic bunch of horsebackers who rode' for ever so long one afternoon and then went down on the hockey field for still another workouM Now that’s more like the Salem spirit!! We notice that Frankie Tyson is still one of our most enthusiastic! Hockey practicers. Our hats are off to you, Frankief We knew you wouldn’t let that smashed finger stop you! Don’t forget, girls, STalem is to send teams to the Hockey meets at Will iamsburg and Greensboro this full. They say these trips are alwaj's loads of fun, so if you’d like to go along, just remember ‘' Practice makes Per fect.” Head out for hockey practice in the afternoons, and mayl)c you’ll find yourself heading off on these trips. IF YOU’VE BEEN WONDERING ABOUT POINTS Evfe. since a list of athletic points for you Salemites was posted a couple of weeks ago, there have been questions concerning the num ber of points recorded for each per son. Some of you have been won dering why you do not have more, and in reading the handbook through the other day we ran across a few rules that might help straighten you out on this subject. The handbook says that for be ing a member of the class team one receives three points. This is; true. But, and there is a “ but’ ’ at the end of the point system, that is Ar ticle II, Section 4g of the A. A. By-Laws, there is this clause: “Sen iors and Juniors who do not attend 30 per cent of the called practises of a sport will not receive any points in that sport but may play on the team,” and “Sophomores and Fiesh- men who do not attend 40 per tent Collegiate Headquarters For Milinery , Bag^, Gloves, and Lingerie BETTY LOU SHOPPE 207 West 4th IN BOTTLES I WELCOME } I } To Piccadilly Gnll, where { you may drop in any time for a sandwich or a feast. Understand? One more point that needs clearing is the one about tennis credit. B«- member, if a girl defaults, she auto matically forfeits the point she would have gotten, for entering the tourna ment, and might as well forget she ever signed up. These two subjects seem to arouse the greatest misunderstandings in broken-hearted athletes who are sure they should liave more points chalk ed up beside their names, and we hope that they now understand where a few of those points may have dis appeared. However, if you’re stiJl in the dark, we refer you to Article II of the Athletic By-Laws, (pages 46-48 of the Handbook). Fourth Street Winston-Salem, N. C. HOCKEY PEP-TALK Hockey has begun — and the Freshmen know it! But our upper classmen seem to have gone plase — we need some older girls to help our novices, and also to compete with them. Eemember juniors and seniors — you were beginners two or three years back, and you know what it is not to have advanced players to lead the scrimmages. And just be cause you Seniors have no more Phys. Ed. class doesn’t mean that you have no more senior class — in the months to come you’ll need a good team, and you can, get one only by constant practice. Congratulations Freshmen — you ’re holding up your end heroically, and with the beginning you’ve got ten, you should be hard to beat. The same Sophomores as usual are com ing out, and one or two others, but how about getting up some compe tition to make the class team. What we really need is more class and school spirit in the line of sports, and if we all get busy, we’ll be able to remedy this situation. For Your Beauty Needs Call LEINBACH’S BEAUTY NOOK 624 W.
