SALEM’S SUMMER ATHLETICS During the summer while most of us were sitting around taking life easy, many of our Salem athletes were “up and doing” things in the sports line. The majority leaned towards sum mer camps and counselor jobs. Ath letic President Sallie Emerson took out for Lake James, N. C. where she spent a month teaching archery and assisting with swimming. (Not that it’s unusual, but we under stand that she kept the place in an uproar the whole time.) Louise Hra- lower was a counselor in a Maine camp where she taught canoeing and swimming, and Betty Crook, a newcomer to Salem, taught the same things at Camp Woodland in Ver mont. Clara Smith Billingslea, an other Freshman and a truly fine swimmer, taught swimming at Camp Whipporw’ill in Pasadena, Md., and Polly Herman who was do ing summer school work at the Uni versity of Vermont took off on week-ends long enough to teach tennis and swimming at Camp Mo hawk on the Mohawk Trail in Mas sachusetts. Lillian Lanning, Leila Johnston, and Miss "At” took off for a week’s training the last of the sum mer at Miss Appleby’s (Kemember her or should we say, can you for get her?) Hockey Camp at Mount Pocono, Pa. They said it rained so much they finally had to resort to playing in their bathing suits. That must have been some sight, yeah? Betsy Moffitt, playing her usual fine style, entered the North Caro lina Junior Girls’ Golf Tournament and survived to play in the Cham pionship Flight. And last but by no means least is our sailor, Sammy Pou of Ealeigh. This summer she was Commadore of the Junior Yacht Club in More- head City where she s-p.e^n d s her summers. This club sponsors 'week ly races jof which Sammy won the bigge^ affdii^ost exciting—the 4th YANKEES DETHRONED of July raee'in which twelve boats were entered. We salute you energetic Salem- ites! With only 11 more games to be played, the New York Yankees seemed destined to be dethroned as world champions, a position they have held for the past several years. Four teams; Detroit, Cleve land, New York and Chicago all have a mathematical chance at the American League championship, but with the season rapidly drawing to a close, the Detroit Tigers and the Cleveland Indians seem to be the two teams to beat. At the present time the Indians are precariously perched on top by a half game mar gin over the second-place Detroit team. In the meanwhile the Cincinnati Reds have clinched the- champion ship of the National League and are anxiously awaiting to see who their opponent will be in the world series. As you know the winner of the National League meets the win ner of the American League in a 4 out of 7 game series, the winner becoming world champions for one year. The world series as a rule attract more fans than any other sport e V e n t, including the Army-Navy game. FASHION’S FROLIC (Continued from Page 4) magic. Well Cinderella was so amazed that she just sat there ia the ashes the rest of the night — and when the sisters came down to breakfast, they couldn’t believe their blood shot eyes — and the wouldn’t be lieve poor stupid little Cinderella — and so they sent her away in a sfraight-jacket and for all I know those good-lookin’ clothes are there in Cinderella’s kitchen waiting for you to come and get them. —B.
