CHAMPIONS
IN ACTION
Several Saleniites went to the
tennis matches in Chapel Hill
Wednesday. Playing were the four
great champions: Donald Budge,
Bill Tilden, Alice Marble and Mary
Hardwick. The matches were held
in the Woolen gymnasium. At
o’clock Wednesday afternoon Miss
Eleanor Tennant, coach of Alice
Marble, held a “tennis clinic” in
which she answered questions con
cerning the game. Miss Tennant
answered questions concerning the
forehand drive, backhand and the
serve. This great coach also told
something of the ability of the four
players who were to plaj'j that
night. Miss Tennant emphasized the
fact that our strokes should not be
jerky and stiff and her favorite
expression in illustrating this point
was “Easy does it." S,he instruct
ed several Carolina students and
pointed out their main faults.
At 8:15 Alice Marble and Mary
Hardwick met in the first match.
Miss Marble is the woman’s
champion and she has been called
the Glamour Girl of the Courts.
Miss Hardwick is English No. 1
woman player and since 1937 no
English woman was defeated her.
Miss Marble won this match in
two out of three sets.
The next match was between
Donald Budge and Bill Tilden. Mr.
Budge, the men’s champion^ tells
the story his mother said when she
learned Donald was serious about
tennis. “Well, my boy Don may
never get to be the best tennis
player in the world, but they’ll
have a hard* time keeping him from
being the homeliest.” “Big Bill”
Tilden is now 47 years old and not
even Father Time can stop him.
These two players had time to play
only two sets of which Tilden won
the first and Budge the second.
In the doubles match Marble and
Tilden won over Budge and Hard
wick.
Managing these four champions
is Jack Harris and he has arranged
approximately sixty matches in five
months. During this time they will
travel about 25,000 miles and use
about $1,000 worth of tennis balls.
Those who saw these matches will
remember Alice Marble’s perfect
timing, Mary Hardwick’s ability
to move so quickly, “Big Bill”
Tilden’s smashing serve and Donald
Budge’s forehand and red mop of
hair.
Among approximately 3,000
people were these Salemites: Miss
Atkinson, Peggy Burnette, Jill
Nierinburg, Betty Vanderbilt, Mary
Elizabeth Band and Sara Henry.
