THE SALEMITE Friday, March 28, 1941- S IP € IP T 1 SALCM TO BECOME NEW SUN VALLEY *- Since we ’ve been having so much snow of late, the authorities have decided to make Salm a new haven for all sports enthusiasts. The snow has fallen, ai\d yet about our swim ming pool there is a radiating warmth, and so we have a varied program. The stream down by the May Court has frozen over. From the top of the white hill we see little dots swishing around. Coming closer, we make out some of these dots. Ruth Thomas is cutting some fancy figures in a close fitting white Jacket and a red velveteen skating skirt. And Becky Kessler seems to be first cousin to Sonja Henie. Lucy Springer is putting her hips to good use—she is knocking down all her opponents in a mad dash to the goal. Oh, the ice is wonderful! And Polly Herman at last can use her skis she brought down last year when a snow'flake fell, Nell Kerns has uncurled her hair so that she can feel comfortable in that won derful ski suit—she’s doing well for a beginner—only broken three pair of skis so far. The bob sledding is not going so well. There are too many neighbor hood brats interfering for the Salem team to do very much. Swimming is progressing. Snave- ly can now plop across the pool. Ceil Nuchols is practising for the next Olympics — whenever Hitler decides to hold off his game long enough to have Olympics. Divers are popping out all over, and we shall soon be defeating Marjorie Gestring. The pool is giving us a chance to get a good sunburn, and all about are tanned faces against white snow'. Salem has at last gained its place Cl Ai Ai Because of the ‘ ‘ slight disturb ance” in }!Jurope, Uncle Sam has found it necessary to endow Salem College with a C. A. A. (Civil Aero something-or-other) Course. The new crack-em-up field, (formerly known as the hockey field) and the Hangarasium (formerly known as THAT place) are now being fit ted out with de-Hitlerized equip ment. All those -wishing to gain their monogram by graduating time are cordially invited to attend class —in fact Uncle Sam has requested that two points plus a cup be awarded to the person who is able to land a “flivver” without in struction. C. A. A. training will begin with the other classes in the fall and will take the place of previous gym classes. Regulation uniforms will be yellow and white, after the Salem tradition. among the leading resorts of the country. Enrollfaient for next year is tremendous", and entrance exams will have to be given. And what have we to thank for this? A well- rounded sports program, and the most wonderful climate east of sun valley. Please walk on the grass. It helps its circulation TANGLES AND TUMBLES Big time wrestling returns to Salem campus as Goon Hutchi son engages Curlylocks Averp, in the main event Saturday night. This match will be best two out of three falls, winner take all. For a curtain raiser a match be tween Muscles Merritt and Milly “Cowgirl” Kelly has been ar ranged. “Cowgirl” Kelly, who gained her remarkable strength and ability riding the range for the Bar-B-Que Ranch in Chicken Switch, Montana, is showing for the first time at the Salem Arena. The tough and ready Babe Law'rence will be on hand to in sure the proper I. R. S. behavior in the ring. Roughhouse McEwen will act as time keeper. The promoters feel elated in be ing able to present such a galaxy of stars on one program. A full evening of rousing entertainment is assured. GEIUJED SANDWICHES — FOUNTAIN — MORRIS SERVICE (Next To Carolina Theatre ATR CONDITIONED “Exclusive But Not Expensive” GOLF STARS PRAISE SALEM GREENS The famous Master’s Golf tourna ment will be held at Salem this year: This is the first time in his tory that the tournament has been held away from Augusta, Ga. On a recent trip through here, Bobby Jones, Gene Saragen, Bryon Nelson, Walter Hagan, and Sam Sneed were so impressed with the Salem course that the change was decided upon. Mr. Saragen was heard to remark that he had never seen the equal of the Sjalem greens! The stars will arrive at Salem a few days ahead of the tournament in order to take advantage of the gracious offer of Miss Minnie At kinson to help them smooth out any faulty swings. Miss Jess Byrd has also offered to jgive them her secret of how to make “holes-in- ones”—that is, if some other child hood disease hasn’t caught up with her by then. “Say It With Flowers” WALKER’S FLORIST PHONE 7422 115 N.
