LIE DETECTOR
“There is no such instrument as
the lie detector” was the paradoxi
cal opening of Mr. James W. Po
well’s discussion of the lie detector
in expanded chapel Wednesday. Mr.
Powell, who is of the North Caro^
lina Department of Justice, added,
however, that the so-called “lie de
tector” is merely an instrument
used as an aid in psychological
technigue.
In explaining this amazing in
strument, Mr. Powell first listed
the different types of lies as (1)
those of the insane, (2) those told
for the pure joy of lying, without
ulterior motive or serious conse
quence, (3) the “little white lies”
of everyday life, and (4) the de
liberate lie told with a purpose.
Then he stated that the only way
to be absolutely sure that a person
is lying is to know facts which
prove thelie. Ther eare, however,
definite physical and emotional re
actions which indicate lying.
In explaining the procedure, Mr.
Powell emphasized the.fact that the
experiment should be carried out
in a room where there will be no
disturbances. The questions should
be short and carefully worded and
should be both general and specific.
The instrument is 100 per cent, ac
curate in what it is supposed to do;
the accuracy of the chart reading
depends upon the interpreter. Its
value lies in that it eliminates in
nocent suspects, aids in obtaining
clues, and frequently prompts a
confession of the guilty party.
Mr. Powell concluded his talk
with a demonstration of the lie
detector, using Ann Ewing as his
innocent victim.
