Page Four. THE SALEMITL Friday, November 7, 1941. SPORTS A NOTE OF FINALITY We are herewith voicing a last desperate plea for some iota of co operation. Your sports editor can not create sports for the Salemite. There must be campus material to work with. Now it is obvious to ovOTyone that there has been no material. It is up to you, the stu dent body, to create the news, and if you are not sufficiently interes ted to do so, we cannot provide what your mail demands of us. The varsity which in cnnate (par don, Mr. Locke), especially in fe males, would cause you ' to want to see your name in print. But it certainly won’t make the headline(s —or even a post script—unless you do something to get it there. If we drop our sports program entirely—and it seems as though we are heading in that direction— a great source of school spirit will be lost. A great goal toward which every class used to work will no longer exist. And Salem, for many will be dead. “Y” ATTENDS CONFERENCE A delegation from Salem will leave Sunday morning for the North Carolina Student Christain Move- mcfnt Conference at Durham, ac cording to Leila Johnston, president of Salem Y. At 1:40 this bunch (and for the sake of facility, let us call this gang “w.0”) is off for the Sedgefield Riding Academy. We enjoy the ride in the station wagon probably as much as the ride on the animal—Miss Averill, watch tho.se moronic witticisms from now on. After a period of training in the ring, we are allowed to foUow sOm© beautiful woodland trails. To wax poetic. Nature exhibits her most vivid colors—and wef of Salem feel she is putting on a special display for us. Leaving these woods we get back to the ugly city—but not before a pause at the Lindale Dairy for on0 of those garguatuan (and sickening) milk-shakes. This last-named oc curence naturally defeats our origi nal purpostf and we arrive at Salem more fatigued, if no lighter. A sound mind never plays in swing time.
