Page Four. THE SALEMITL Friday, December 5, 1941. SPORTS RUTH DRAPER (Continued from Pege 1) and Ralph Emerson, she met Char les Dana, later editor of the New Tory Sun, and married him. Miss Draper received encouragement for her work from her grandmother and from Paderc'wski who visited her homo in 1913. Aedian Hall in London was the scene of the first public appearance. After this initial performance?, she toured through England and Scot land doing “recitals”, and appear ing on various hall programs. She appeared on one bill which particu larly impressed itself upon her memory, becausi? the cue for her number came after the tame sea- lion act wh(?n the seal came paddling by her dressing room door. Then she came to New York where for six months she gave dramatic mono logues before enthusiastic theatre goers. Miss Draper comes to Win ston-Salem after a successful two year tour of Europe and South America and Broadway. Misa Draper has been called "monologist”, “recilter”, dis- euse”, “impersonator”, and “elo- ■she prefers to be designated as an “actor”. Alone on the stage she conjures up characters from every walk of life with the truth and authenticity that is the artist’s genius. She' has captivated audi encea all the way around the world from, New York and Kansas City to Singalpore and the Fiji islands; the fact that the audiences have returned to see her again and again is a tribute to her genius. The presentation of dramatic monologues is not new to Winston- Salem 'audiences; they received a similiar program by Mias Cornelia Otis Skinner in 1937 with avid praise. Miss Draper is even more widely known nationally than Miss Skinner. Her programs contain from eight to ten monologues and acquaint the audience with more than fifty characters. She has twenty-four sketches in her repertoire with more than one hundred and fifty characters portrayed. The sketches, in English with occasional snatches of French, German, or Italian, are authentic and arc drawn from actual experiences. Her characters live for the listener through the careful and unusual choice of de tail by which Miss Draper depicts them. It has been said of her by critics that she is “the foremost mimic of our time”. She “brings a varie ty of characters to tingling life.” Concerning “In a church in Italy” which she will giv« in Winston-Sa- lem on Monday night, one New THEATRE CALENDAR Carolina All week “Honky Tonk” State Mon.-Tues. “Married Bachelor” Wed. “Life With Father” on stage Thurs.-Fri.-Sat. “Spooks Run Wild” Forsyth Mon.-Tues. “Cheers for Mrs. Bishop” Wed.-Thurs. “One Foot in Heaven” Fri-Sat. ‘ ‘ Gay Falcon ” Colonial JIon.-Tues. “Jungle Man” Wed.-Thurs. “I Wanted Wings” Fri-Sat. ‘ ‘ Gun Man from Bodie ’ ’ York paper—said: “The piece de resistance is a scene in a church in Italy.
