Page Four. THE SALEMITE Nov. 10, 1944. MARY HOLT HILL Alumnae Work For Uncle Sam Again Salem College campus was made a little brighter by tlie ap pearance of one of the alumnae. Several weeks ago it was Ensign Betty Moore, and this week it was Aileen Seville, President of the Class of ’44. Seville, as she is us ually called, graduated last year and is now working for the Signal Corps in Arlington, Virginia. She couldn’t tell us anything about her work, as it is a very “hush-hush” affair; but she did say that it is interesting, and gathering from her enthusiam, she really likes her job. Aillen gets her turn at working all three shifts—day shift, “swing” shift, and “graveyard” shift. Seville is living in “a telephone booth/’ as she fondly calls her room in Main Hall, one of the government dormitories at Arlington Farms. Judging from her conversation, Seville is still a true Southerner. We also hear that Miss Agnes Brown (former faculty member) is now working for the War Food Ad ministration. She and Miss Sarah Turlington (’36) are both taking courses at the graduate school of the Department of Agriculture. They report that they are seeing many good plays in addition to doing their work. Why, you might find her in the Clewell Smokehouse or in Sister’s House ...” But don’t go to Sister s just before lights are out—because she probably will be visiting in Clewell (somehow she always dashes back to Sisters just in time!). Mary Holt is one of that attractive four some in room two. The others are Katherine Gregory, Katherine Mc Cloud, and Lucy Sheffield. Any time of the day when you find Mary Holt there, she’ll probably be lying on the top bunk of her double-decker among her five toy animals! The minute she opens her mouth you can tell where she’s from. She has charming, easy Northern ac cent and expressions. Invariably she ends a sentence with a “ ... hey.” And if she disagrees, she’ll reply, “Don’t hand me that!” Mary Holt is thinking of majoring in French. Something she has dis covered since she has been at Salem is art—for the first time she is tak ing it, and has found that it is the right thing after all! Like all good Yankies, she plays a good game of hockey. We can’t wait to see her running down the hockey field to mount up the goals for the Freshman team! But hockey is not her only favorite sport. She’s been riding horseback for years. And have you seen her batting around on the tennis courtsT Her walk is characteristic of her. She strolls along like she’s taking life easy . . . but look a little closer and you’ll see that there’s something of a know-where-she’s-going air in her walk. She appears to have a c!'.lra feeling that the good solid earth’s beneath her feet. Perhaps this also has something to do with her remarkable ability not to worry! Mary Holt has gay, sparkling blue eyes and an original hair-do (that good looking fluff of curls on one side of her head is something she invented herself!) And she is de lightfully unpredictable — she even takes sunbaths in October! She’s natural; she’s individual; she’s just Mary Holt! We Southerners will havis to ad mit that Mary Holt is a good Yankee, and we’re glad to have her as a Salemite! I I I Belk-Stevens Co. I g DEPT. STORE B fit s ss . A day student, Ann is Salem Aca demy’s gift to the college and what a blessing she is—especially to an otherwise dull conversation! Her “life of the party” personality and “do anything for you” attitude may come from an agreeable mixture of the mountain air and the salt spray on which she thrives by summer. Ann answers, when asked her pre ferences, “I like more than I dis like.” As a sidelight, she wants lots of what she likes, for instance, tall men! She requires also that they be “hard-to-get,” good “party boys,” and willing to slice a rug to Tommy Dorsey beats! When a big event comes up, ten to one, Ann’ll be there looking mischievous in a demure white evening dress and unopposed as the ‘ ‘ life of the party.” baWy write up the event for a On top of all this action, she’ll pro town paper—it’s a hobby with her as well as searching dusty corners for Toby jifgs. There’s a golf course located behind her house which ac counts for another of her hobbies —golf. In writing of our ‘ ‘ gift” from the j Academy, we’ll have to say it is obvious that there’s a certain V- 12’er at Carolina who’d like to have Ann all “tied up” for Christmas. So good with food WINSTON COCA-COLA BOTTLING CO. Hockey Field Now Full Of Activity There’s nothing like a relaxing gym lab after a hard day’s school work! You stroll casually down to tlie gym for an afternoon of relaxa tion—planning to play golf or some other equally soothing sport. When, bang, just like that, you are whisk ed into a game of hockey. There you stand, dazed and confused, after one of Dr. Confer’s history tests, with a stick dangling from one hand, when some well-meaning^ team-mate dribbles and passes the ball to you then the fun really be- 4 gins! Stovall comes thundering down on you with that wicked stick of hers. You look up, but no it couldn’t be—yes, those two malevolent look ing individuals behind the little steel cages are Denning and Heit- man. By this tiiMe, the ball is deep in your own territory again, and you sigh with relief that the crisis has passed. Suddenly both teams surge back up the field as Barb Watkins swats a fifty-yard drive directly at you. Rosalind plark swoops down on you and wriggles the ball down the field. She is met at the goal by McGee, a*formidable foe completely equipped with knee - high shin guards, seven pound cleated shoes, and determination. At this crucial point, Mary Ellen blows the whistle and gym lab is over—thank good ness! All you can say as you stmble up the steps is, “when does bad minton season start?” Hill AT MINE’S West Fourth Street Quality Merchandise Reasonably Priced 3K 3X Xi j>: % % a 3>; % I % »•. p. as On the Way Back From the Movie Stop at KENT BAKERY (Next to Montaldo’s) FOR CHESS PIES, BUNS AND BROWNIES FOR A TASTY MIDNIGHT SNACK!
