May 4, 1945. THE SALEMITE Page Seven. Seniors Make Big Plains For Indefinite Futures For the class of ’45 the future holds much in store, we hope. Most of the seniors would like to say that their plans are not definite— shall we say, fond hopes? Emily Harris Amburgey will turn toward—you guessed—Capt. Am- burgey and their little white house in Florida. June will find Mildred Garrison altar-bound with Lt. Paul Cash. Ah • • . those wedding bells . . . Still in the romantic realm will be Mary Frances McNeely waiting im patiently for the Marines to give Sgt. Dick O’Brien a furlough—again the strains of “Lohengrin.” Adele Chase and Mamie Herring are going to depend on jobs to help pass the time until they, too, say “I do.” Adele thinks journalism or social work is the answer. Mamie plans to teach merry tunes to school children. Speaking of teaching, the problem is—where? The indecision is deadly —Helen Phillips will testifj' to that. Mary Ellen Byrd says that those official envelopes and mile-long ap plication blanks are maddening. But We notice she’s considering work in Florida. Luanne Davis is dreaming of those same palm trees, and then again of Alaska. Betty Jean Jones and Betty Grantham are planning to join the J'anks of teachers somewhere. Hazel Watts will be receiving those apples for the teacher,” also. In faraway Alaska ’mid igloos and the Northern Lights we have visions of R^ances Crowell and the three ETs. ^eggy BolUn, too, will be found in some “little red school house.” Molly Boseman is looking toward social work, maybe the Red Cross. Genevieve Frasier is considering a position as a personnel director. Sachel Pinkston will be working ■W'ith the Red Cross at the hospital &t Fort Bragg. Also hearing the call of the Red Cross are Elizabeth Bectwith and Frances Jones. Dodie Bayley finds Springfield, Ohio, is the place to work. Jane Frazier will be studying voice in New York as will be Norma Khodes. Mary Coons also seems to be New York bound for more study in piano. In a church somewhere Jose phine McLauchlin expects to find her career as organist and choir director. Lucille Newman wants to follow her talents at the Rhode Island School of Design. Kathleen PhiUips is going to study textiles at State. Alyce Stevens will be working to ward her M. A. degree in home eco nomics at Columbia University. In the scientific world: Nancy Helsbeck will be juggling test tubes at the Bowman Gray School of Medi cine. Angela Taylor will take train ing in dietetics at the Charlotte Memorial Hospital. Dietetics, again; for Mary Lucy Baynes at the Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Dorothy Kiser is considering nurse’s training. In Asheville, EUzabeth Gudger hopes the Reclassification Center will need a new employee. Nell Denning finds fun and fond memories of Salem her objective for a while, beyond that indefinite. Ann Sauls says that question mark is a giant-sized one. Finishing with the patriotic note it’s the Waves for Edith Stovall that’s definite. Paschal Shoe Repair Co. Pi P I "ELECTRICITY I I I I In War ... I I Don’t Waste It” | I Duke Power Co. | Remember when a Salem alumnus discovered a field ambulail/je in France which -was donated by Salem College! His name was Brooks Bynum. This same Brooks Bynum, now in Germany, has just had the experience of having a German general surrender to him! The incident took place on a reconnaisance mission in Germany around the middlle of April. There were no details of the capture or surrender, but Brooks is now the possessor of a German general’s pistol turned over to him personally as an act of surrender. In a recent V-Mail letter to his mother, Mrs. Brooks A. Bynum, he described the incident as one of the most excit ing and unusual of his experiences. By way of making another ad dition to his list of unusual exper iences, brooks is the adjutant of his regiment of the 309th Division— the first regiment to cross lAie Rhine in the recent spearhead drive across the Ludendorf Bridge. Brooks has jbeen oVfirseas tfor six months and writes that he is now moving so fast that he does not have much time for correspondence. He was a special voice student here at Salem about tour years ago, and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Brooks A. Bynum of this city.
