Be Educated; Study Abroad
Choice Of Countries Given
by lone Bradsher
Jean rolled over on the bed,
shoved her book-s on the floor, and
groaned. She looked at her room
mate who was sitting Turk-fashion
with a book on her knees.
She shook her head and waved a
hand. “Smith-Hughes Act of 1917
provides financial aid to states . . .
“All right, what?”
“I think I’ll study abroad.”
Betty slammed her book shut and
leaned back on the pillow. “Yeah,
I can just see that! You better
start here first.”
“Well, you should read this bro
chure. It’s put out by the Educa
tional Travel Division of the Ameri
can Express Company, and you can
plan everything through them. ’ ’
“Why do you want to go? After
all we just had a war oever there.”
“Oh, I don’t know. The best
opportunity to learn another lan
guage is by actually living around it.
And if you were interested in arch
aeology there’s Egypt or Mexico;
or interested in social organization
you could go to India or South
America.
‘Yes, but you are definitely not
the type.”
“Course not, but I could see fam
ous places; art works. “See what
they’re up to” it says here. Think
of how I’ll appreciate the USA
when I return! There’s nothing
like coming in contact with another
living culture.”
Honolulu. There are four Univer
sities in Belgium. Louvain and
Brussles have dorms, too. They run
mid October to mid June.”
“What else?”
In Canada there are loads . . . U
of Ottawa . . . Toronto. At the Uni
versity of Montreal they speak
French in class!”
“That lets me out. Can you speak
Enlish anywhere?”
“Well, it sounds like fun, and
I’ll think about it. Eeally! The
Smith-Hughes Act ...”

“Living culture! Betty snorted
as she set the alarm. “Just wait
till you miss inner springs and sir
loins.”
“It says most of the French Uni
versities have some dorm rooms. But
few of the non-English speaking
countries do. One can always work
through the atache at the U. S. Em-
basy. There is a Rockefeller ‘Inter
national House’ in Paris. In Rio
there is a section of town dominated
by students . . . rather like the
Latin Quarter in Paris.”
There was silence. Betty looked
over her glasses at her roommate,

“Oh, those countries are always

‘ ‘ That’s just China. In Australia,
Canada, Erie, Norway, South Africa
it’s about $75 a month or less. It
is never definite.”
“How do you think you will get
in. All that red tape to go through.
What sort of school would you at
tend . . . Soil Conservation 101?”
“Outside the Commonwealth of
Nations and American Missions
there are no liberal arts colleges.
Foreign universities like to have
juniors, and some prefer graduates.
It won’t be long before I’ll be qua
lified.”
“ . . . you hope.”
“Yes, but the hard thing is this:
you have to watch your credits.
Over there a degree is based on
exams . . . not hours. However, they
respect the quaint American custom
and send your credits back.”
Betty moaned, “What about me
I can only speak English. “Could I
go to a summer school and have
language orientation?”
“Sure. We could get about a
dozen passports, warm clothes,
coffee, odds and ends and go! ”
‘Where?’
“Well.” . . . Jean flipped a page
and sat straight up on the bed. “If
you want a cosmopolitan University,
