Athletics Accented by Jan Ballantine The Seniors defeated the Sopho mores Tuesday night in the most exciting game of the year. Even though the score was 29-17, the teams were very evenly matched. In the third quarter the score was 16-15, with the Seniors still in the lead. Bill Green, sophomore for ward, made two beautiful long shots which brought the score up and the spectators cheering. The sophs could not hold the score long. Peggy Watkins was high scorer of the game shooting a total of 17 points. Eeeognition also goes to Carolyn Taylor for her excellent job of guarding. The fouling was vice versa for her—her forward fouled out this time (not to mention who it was.) Carolyn, you done good! Taking a review of athletic abili ties at Salem we find we have a wide and varied field. Carolina may have “Choo-Choo” but Salem has Beverly Johnson. She doesn’t play football but we follow her “all the way” on the basketball court which amounts to about the same thing. Then there’s Vicky Hamilton, the girl golfer, and Cammy Lovelace, who excels not only in badminton but also in ping pong. Come spring we will all be watching Ann Eixey pitching for the Sophomores. Along with her we will find “heavy-hit ter” Eula Cain. As the weather gets even warmer, and the dorms get hotter, and the students get lazier, most everybody will be found at the pool trying to learn to dive like Candy Untiedt and Martha Hershberger. Or they will be try ing to take sunbaths like Anne Car rington, Nancy Florence, and Dee McCarter. Then on Sunday after noons you will find Jo Dunn, mount ed on her favorite steed, at one of the nearby stables. If none of these appeals to you try reading, “How to To-Yo in Five Easy Lessons” by the great To-Yo champ, Sue Stowers. Remember to keep supporting YOUR A. A. World Federalists (Continued from page one) Under the second classification fall the organizations within the move ment and their particular policies. According to one conception, the Federalist task is to persuade the United States government to propose and immediately press for the re vision of the United Nations into a World Security Government, limi ted primarily to the control of the weapons of mass destruction. This opinion has largely shaped the dir ection of the American movement since the merger of the principal Federalist groups into UWF in Ashe ville, February, 1947. It is known as the minimalist stand among Fed eralists, and it and the maximalist view will be debated. Because people are inclined to feel that the Federalist movement con sists only of speech-making, ideal istic students without effective backing, one of the aims of the new campaign will be to dispell this illu sion. The programs of other organi zations that are working for the same ultimate goal as Student Fed eralists will be covered. Among these are the Usborne Plan, The Committee to Frame a World Con stitution, World Registry and others. Possibly reports on the activities of various nearby college chapters will be heard. These issues will be presented to the Salem public through the media of library and Book Store displays, assembly speakers, movies and panel discussions in the regular monthly meetings, to which everyone is in vited. A special objective of the college group this spring is to re activate the Salem Academy chapter.
