Tootsie (continued from page five) thing it takes: capability judici ously tempered with cleverness, in telligence mixed with exeoutiveness, and above all, understanding joined to practicality. In the space alloted me, it is im possible to give the reader an en compassing portrait of Emelyn. She needs no introduction—she’s made her mark here and stands out among us all. Life here at Salem has been much livelier since her enroll ment and to say that she’ll be missed when she’s gone is the understate ment of the week. For the greatest understatement of the week, I refer you tp another article on this page. Carolyn But aside from these attributes, Carolyn never could be mistaken for anyone but Carolyn. Constantly on the go, rushing in a state of dir ected confusion (get the idea?), Casey is the High Priest of the Salemite office. At almost any hour of the day or night, she can be found bent double over a book on Colly Cibber, writing furiously in a kind of jargon which closely resem bles chicken scratch. Add to that the characteristic frown over a sen tence she doesn’t understand (a rare thing), the laugh that comes out like an asthmatic wheeze, the brisk Salemite assignments, the loose jackets that hang at the shoulders, the floppy bedroom slippers beating up the steps at 2 A. M. after a study session, the too-long pajamas that somehow manage to make her look like a fretful cocker spaniel, cigarettes that are always wet on one end, a personal library ranging from Plato to Thurber, parallel reading that is continually done ahead of time, and a trip to Europe on the Queen Mary, and you have a pocket-sized'idea of what life with the Chief is like. She asked me not to get ' ‘ slushy ’ ’ in this article, but I put it mildly when I say she’s a whale of a gal (figuratively speak ing, of course) and if you want a great kick out of life, sneak up on Casey sometime when she is study ing or re-writing a Salemite assign ment and watch her chew her lip or twist one piece of hair.
