Charles G. Vardell Jr., pianist and Dean of the School of Music at Salem College, will be guest soloist with the Winston-Salem Symphony on October 25. His performance will include Ingrid’s Lament, Arabian Dance, and Solvejg’s song from “Peer Gynt Suite No. 2” by Grieg and “Concerto in A Minor” also by Grieg. Dr. A'ardell was born in Salis bury, North Carolina. He was edu cated at Princeton University, the Institute of Musical Art in New York City, and Julliard School of Music. He taught at Hotchkiss School in Connecticut, but he re signed to do Y. M. C. A. work during the war. From 1919 to 1923 Dr. Vardell was Dean of Music at Flora McDonald College in Red Springs, N. C. From there he came to Salem as head of the piano de partment. In 1928 Dr. Vardell was named Dean of Music?'at Salem College; however, from 1939 to 1940 he completed his work for M. A. and Ph. D. degrees at Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester. As Dean of Music here at Salem, Dr. Vardell has taught piano, organ, composition, orchestration, and he has served as organist and choir master in var ious churches in Winston-Salem. Dr. Vardell has many original compositions. He won the Shirley Cup offered for a composition by a North Carolina composer. Some of his compositions include a sonata for organ, another for violin and piano, a symphonic poem “The Revenge of Hamish”, an orches tra composition using a setting of old southern folk dances “Joe Clark Steps Out”, and a piano piece “Cookie Jar”. Some of Dr. Var- dell’s compositions have been per formed by the Rochester Philhar monic Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the N. B. C. Symphony Orchestra, and other well known orchestras.' The remainder of the program, which will be presented by the Winston-Salem Symphony, will in clude “Overture to an Italian Comedy” by Benjamin, Polka and Fugue from “Shvanda” by Wein berger, “Adago for Strings” by Barber, and “Capriccio Italien” by Tschaikowsky. Mr. James Lerch of Salem College will conduct the orchestra.
