Doris Plays Piano, Sings; Likes Dumas, Davidson by Joan Carter Read One of whom we see too little is Doris Keith. For when Doris is not busy practicing for her recital, or teaching her piano pupil, she will be found knitting argyles, read ing Dumas, or preparing to go to Davidson for the weekend. A music major from Raeford, Doris is a piano pupil of Dr. Var- dell. She sings in the Choral En semble in which she is one of the main stays of the soprano section. She will give her piano recital in the spring. When it comes to other things in music, Doris says she loves most classical music and some popular songs; especially those sung by Gordon McCrae or Jo Stafford. But hillbilly, be-bop, and boogie woogie head her list of intense dislikes. “Claire du Lune” is her favorite classical piece, when played by an orchestra, and “Wonderful One” is her pet popular song. Among her other interests, which are many and varied, Doris likes to be an armchair sportsman listen ing to Carolina win (she hopes) and the Cleveland Indians fight for the pennant. Politics interest her and she hopes Mr. Stassen will be nominated by the Republicans next time. She loves to read; parti cularly, Dumas, Hugo and Dickens. She thinks that modern novels have Boris Keith little or no story and they are frustrating, so why read them. After graduation, Doris hopes to go on with her music, perhaps at Julliard, until George finishes with his theological studies. Yes, to all of you who have been wondering, George is the boy Doris met at Salem-Davidson Day this year and, as she puts it, she is engaged to be engaged.
